Today I turned a decade in my recovery. Actually, I had my last illicit substance back in 2008 but I had an alcoholic drink for the last time on 10 June 2012.

Supposed autistic people are more vulnerable to addiction than neurotypicals. I'm not sure about that but I do know that alcohol was ruining my life and I'm glad to be without it. If anyone else here is on a recovery journey I wish them well.

I don't think addiction affects Aspies any more than NTs.

Well done you!

I've been clean and sober for 32 years.

I think that deserves congrats too.
Although its not my choice to be sober , i dont suffer adverse consequences from drinking...because i dont drink much... so I dont consider it to be something i wish i didnt do. if i were on meth i would be like 'oh i have to stop doing this!'

That's good since it was a problem for you.

I suppose it's been several months for me since I self-medicated with such during a bad period, which isn't really the smartest thing when combined with some medications I'm on, but maybe I'm not as dumb as I sound (I know equivalent doses, length of QT prolongation at specific doses and so on). I don't get addicted, albeit I do get some beneficial therapeutic effects, hence, it can help. I'm not all that good mentally now to be honest, but I haven't used such, which I'm sorta indifferent to, simply because it's never been a problem for me.

My father also never abused such, so I don't have any bad connotations there with ethanol. He abused H. Which sorta led to some funny moments in my past where my mother greatly feared that I may have inherited it, so some surgeries and injuries were low on the Opiates for analgesia because I went without such to allay her fears. I didn't inherit it.

I've known some men that abused ethanol. To sleep and for self-medication, as they didn't want to get proper psychiatric help for what ailed them. They ended up needing the help and the ethanol just made it far harder for them in the end.

Congratulations!

I'm just curious. After such a long time of being clean, are there still moments when you feel tempted to drink a bit?

I'm not capable of being addicted to alcohol but I'm thinking to stop drinking alcohol completely because alcohol is a proven carcinogen. The difficult part is that it goes well with certain foods such as salami and cheese, which are also proven carcinogens.

I appreciate the responses and my heart goes out to anyone struggling with addiction. It is not easy but keep on trying.

Congratulations David,

I will be sober 10 years in October and I can deeply appreciate the journey you have made.

I was only diagnosed as Aspie last year and without a spiritual program I am not sure I could have coped. My partner left me at the same time so it was a double wammie.

Every morning I read from my 3 little books of daily readings and I embrace my delights and difficulties.

Well done,

Mulgajane.
