the next day.

It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late

Isn't it ironic
Don't you think?

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought - it figures!

Mr. Play-It-Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought, "Well isn't this nice"

And isn't it ironic
Don't you think?

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought - it figures!

Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out
When you think everything's gone wrong
And everything blows up in your face

It's a traffic jam when you're already late
It's a no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife

And isn't it ironic
Don't you think?
A little too ironic
Yeah, I really do think

No, plenty of those things aren't actually ironic. A black fly in your Chardonnay is unlucky, not ironic. The story about the guy getting on the flight is ironic.

See, what would be ironic is if you stood in a field full of cow pats swarming with dung flies whilst holding a glass of Chardonnay, and then you'd decide to enter the safety of the house right next to it, only for a fly to plunge into the glass as soon as you close the door.

You should see the updated version of Ironic on the James Corden show.

The old man didn't turn and eat. He turned 98.

It's ironic because most of the things mentioned arent ironic.
Theyre mostly just bad luck.

No, the opening line is:

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day

I live in a dry county, I’ll fish that fly out of the Chardonnay and keep on drinking.
If you waste good wine , that’s alcohol abuse.

But wouldnt you at least be AWARE that you're mishearing it?

"Turned, and he ate" is a Non sequitur to EVERY thing. And it's a non sequitur to both winning the lottery, and to dying.

So it should have been obvious to you that you're not hearing it right.
