I wonder if anyone here remembers the old ICQ community of many years past. I remember the Current Events board, which I frequented for several years, was one the nastiest places I'd ever been before or since.

I wasn't sophisticated enough in the ICQ days to participate in ICQ.

I don't know sophisticated you needed to be on ICQ.

I met some great people there, though. The woman from Switzerland I've talked about before.

I knew about ICQ----I've seen it----Perhaps if there was a pressing need, I might have gone into it.

I started on the Internet in 1996. I just did basic research and basic chatrooms.

I think my primary reason was a need to connect with people from other countries and cultures. Although, the first person I chatted with was a woman from Grenada who was rather nuts.

It got better from there

I don't recall any community/boards etc, only the individual chat app. I still remember my ICQ UIN as if it were the phone number to my childhood home.

I used ICQ during the year 2000 only. Good times.....

I landed there in 2003 when it was probably already past its prime. They did do away with the forums at one point.

I’ve vaguely remembered ICQ but it wasn’t really to my liking. Was reluctant to try it out.

It was The Messaging app to use before MSN Messenger came out. You could have msn messenger contacts added to it as well.

The name ICQ stood for “I Seek You,” iirc. Just a cute name for a messaging app to find friends.

Everyone had a “UIN,” (Unique Identifying/Indentifier Number) which was just an 8 digit number that identified your account. It was the primary key in their database. Some of us remembered them like phone numbers - I still remember mine. Your number never changed, but you could change your display name all your wanted just like on messenger your email address was the primary key and you could change your display name.

ICQ was made by some Israeli company back in the day. No idea if they ever had any kind of software success or popularity after that. This was back around 1998.

I used an app called Trillian so I could get all of my messaging in one place (ICQ, MSN, AIM, YIM, etc.). Seems like a long time ago now.

I had a friend from a car forum that used that so he could add me from ICQ and others. I can't recall if I ever used it myself or not - maybe I did.. sounds familiar, actually. I think you could login to ICQ and MSN at the same time and have all your contact lists up. Maybe I did use it near the end of that era.
