40 Celsius in the UK next week...what will happen?

Most likely not with a short heat wave.
That happens with long running droughts.When we had one years ago one of rural wells that supplies part of the county got low.The National Guard came and brought water Buffalo trucks so the local school would have enough water to stay open.

Even I can understand, deduce, realize, that is not a wise thing to do.
First off, there is the potential for thermal damage.
Then there is the thing about introducing microbes and sugars other elements which don't belong there.

^Um, I would have never even thought of doing that. That's disgusting.

However I have put ice cubes down my back before. That really helps cool you off.

So, July 18 2022, the first day of the 'heatwave'.

Verdict: a hot summer's day, a few degrees higher than I'd have liked, but not a huge deal. You get a few days like this every time we have a hot summer over here, which as I remarked earlier, is once or twice a decade. Needless to say, it's being played for all it's worth in certain quarters as evidence of the 'climate emergency'. For God's Sake!
