Meanwhile, my friend Ninja who lives at the beach snags 'em out of the ocean for free & cooks up sea spiders for dinner. I've seen him bait traps with fish heads etc, but I knew that he Also just wades out into the water and collects them with his bare hands.

A couple nights ago I was there while he was doing this, then he came back with a few bags full of crab legs and gave one to Max to take home and cook and then came with me and we boiled them up and had a crab feast at 4am. :D We split the legs of 3 large crabs - tasted pretty good! Would have cost At Least $110+ to buy them. :screwy:

He's gotten pretty good at his crab snagging process, too.. stomps the ground in the water just off shore to scare them out of their hiding holes.. distracts them with a stick and gets them to try and grab itf then bends down and grabs them from behind and flips them over to check sex etc, tosses 'em in a bag or bucket if they're keepers.. takes them ashore and uses a stick planted firmly in the sand to smash them in half with and toss the bodies for the birds and keep the legs for their meat.

Little bit of beach spice (sand) on the ends that doesn't all rinse off but w/e probably never killed anyone to eat a couple grains of sand. Quite nice with some melted butter. Managed to snap pretty much every segment apart with bare hands and used a sharp serrated steak knife for a couple/to pick meat from the depths.

All in all a pretty awesome super fresh meal for very low $$. 8) Quite the delicacy. It's a shame more unhoused people don't hunt/fish/pick berries etc. I mean, maybe a bunch do and I have no idea.. but Ninja is the only one I see crabbing, especially without traps lol. Not a bad existence to live at a beautiful beach and always have fresh crab to eat if he hasn't managed to go score some groceries at a store or donated/bartered from a local butcher.

Others definitely eat the crabs there, too. Another beacher took my for a boat ride over to Secret Beach (shhhhh!) nestled in the rock jetty near low tide (high tide it's flooded) as I'd never been there only heard of it. When we got there someone had Just left as there was a fire still smoldering and a bunch of remnants of crabs in a pile. Super cool that we live in this pretentious tech city, but everyone from homeless people to boat owning Millionaires can boil up a crab feast on Secret Beach - if they know the secrets.. of how to snag and prepare crabs and where secret beach is lol - but still, they can and do cook 'em up anywhere along the beach it's just kinda rare/not a daily occurrence/if it's frequent there's very little evidence left behind as the birds must clean things up.

That's one beach meal off my bucket list.. now another I Need to have are some of Jemma's steaks cooked on rocks selected from the ocean, seasoned by sea salt and maybe a little bit of kelp. For real - people bring some of the finest steak cuts down to the beach to prepare them like this and apparently the taste is unreal.

Trying some new restaurant sounds BORING compared to dining like this. IMO. No matter how much wealth I do or don't have or ever accumulate I'll ALWAYS choose beach life dining over fancy dining rooms and fancy pretentious BS. So much more... real. 8)

Nah, they’re definitely doing it for money. And different crabs.. bigger, much more expensive delicacies.

But people can legit just wade into the water and snag Good edible crabbies for free. 8)

Yes, some folks like to live where it is easy to catch your own fresh seafood.
I live fifty miles from the Long Island Sound but I can drive to the beach in less than an hour!
When I was a kid I lived just minutes from the beach for a few years. By foot and not by car!

I recall that folks would take the day off when the fish were running but I also remember that ending as the fish were no longer that plentiful.

I live about 50km from the beach I hang out at. (31 miles) I live much closer to other beaches; 10 miles or so, but No other beach compares to the one I go to. I've sometimes driven or ridden there twice a day if I have other things that take me away from the beach for a bit.

People definitely travel to certain beaches/rivers etc when salmon are running. I dunno, but I think the runs are smaller and smaller due to over fishing. Some major interventions need to happen to allow the oceans to heal and restock or we're not going to have anymore fish anymore. I remember reading some article that said we could completely decimate fish stocks by 2050 or something like that.. like literally no more fish in the ocean.

Hard to say what'll happen if we focus on hatching more salmon etc etc - fishies might not be able to survive in warm acidic water.. :/

Maybe it's for the best that very few people go crabbing along local beaches.. might take 'em all and kill off the local population vs. just a few people snagging larger males and leaving the rest.

I've never lived just minutes from a beach.. stayed that close, but never lived that close. Ideally I'd never live far away from my 2 favourite beaches here, but I'd temporarily relocate for $ or education and then come back.
