Our homegrown eggs have a totally different coloured yolk to commercial eggs.
True free ranging yolks are almost orange inside.
We have some araucanas and crosses too, so the shells can range from traditional white to brown, plus green to blue.

Green eggs and ham anyone?

I was always lead to believe that "eggs are eggs" but now I'm starting to think they're not

We used to have ostriches.
An ostrich egg is equivalent to about 20 chook eggs.

So 1 egg made us frittata for 4, plus 2 cakes.
I was surprised to see that they were usually laid STANDING UP, so there was more than a metre drop onto baked clay, which they always survived.
It took a lot of work with a Dremel and diamond burrs from the dentist to carve a shell, which I had to blow out with a compressor. (I blew one with lung power once...it nearly killed me.)

Did you know that there is an "egginess" scale?
IIRC Duck and goose eggs are a 4
Chicken and ostrich are a 1

Google is being refractory about showing it though.

When I was a young child, I once heard my mom or gran talk something about Salmonellosis in the context of duck eggs but I didn't understand it well - I just thought that duck eggs are covered by some thick layer of poison so every time I touched such an egg, I had to wash my hands. I remember once I happened to touch such an egg and because I had no access to water then, I just wiped my hands on my trousers - I was like 5 then. I remember myself count to 100 - every number was for one wipe :D

I'm almost the same with olives, I don't eat them, but I eat olives on pizza, now I want pizza.

Both my yolks burst when I cracked the eggs in the pan yesterday. My enthusiasm for breakfast was over before they'd even cooked, it was very dispiriting. Hopefully today will be a better day.

Ova update: no such problems today. Perhaps I was being a little flamboyant with my egg cracking yesterday.

Today was all function, no flair and the result was a better breakfast. Lesson learned.
