I am so niaeve!!
Yee gads...I received a collect call at 8:00 this morning..."You have received a collect call from the Harris county Jail...blah blah blah....so I accepted...and there was some guy on the line who said that a friend of ours was in processing and that I could reach them by dialing an extention first and then a phone number...
I did that, and just got a voicemail....then all day after that, the phone would ring one short ring and then stop..and we have not been able to get phone numbers. People have been calling to receive an automated message stating that our voicemail had not been set up, and later, they would call to get a um..lady who answered...so I called from my own phone and got the lady and she had no idea what I was talking about....blah....turns out our calls had been forwarded..they had been using our phone line all day for long distance and collect calls.....don't let this happen to you.....if you receive a collect call and a stranger on the other line tells you to call another number...DON"T DO IT....

It was easily fixed by dialing #73...It took me forever to figure this out..as the automated customer service is completely awful...but no telling how many expensive calls have been racked up.

I am supposed to call customer service on Monday... :? to discuss the expensive calls that were billed to us all day today

I can understand about the phone situation.

When I got back to school yesterday, I found out that my roommate was downloading porn on my computer. Thank God my dad is an IT tech and was able to straighten things out. And I also talked to the RA about it.

If I remember hacker terminology, that's not hacking, but phreaking. It's still a bad thing. It's manipulation of telephone lines to get free calls and that. Hopefully, you can get this stuff sorted out.

Our phone was hacked a while ago...

http://www.alinssite.info/Alin/My_Blog/ ... sment.html

ARGH! It appears as though I left a huge security hole in my website. Our last name’s were on this website and someone came from justin.tv and took our last names looked us up in yellow book and then 11:00 last night in the chat room someone named pump4life said, “You are a fraud your parents are ****ing dumb for letting you do this on the internet you probably aren't even from Romania and I hope you die.” Then about five minutes later we get a phone call, and the person says “I hope your son dies, he is a ****ing fraud and a looser for doing this on the internet and you are a ****ing crap parent for just giving him free reign on the internet.” Midnight the same person calls only this time using our own number meaning he hijacked our phone number. On the midnight call he said, “Your son will die” at 4:00 in the morning today we got another call same person only sounding drunk saying “**** you all” we changed our phone number today and it is now unlisted along with our newly unlisted address. Our phone number changed over around noon today, but at 5:00 PM a pizza delivery man rang the doorbell and we didn't order pizza, apparently pump4life ordered pizza to be delivered to our house. No it was not prepaid so we sent it back and explained what happened.

Today there weren't any problems aside from a plumber coming at 11:00 in the morning and saying hello I was sent here for an order. Mom responded we didn't call for plumbing. The plumber said well is this your last name and address on the order and handed the paper to mom. She said yes it is, but someone hijacked our phone number and is making arbitrary orders with it; we had pizza delivered yesterday that we didn't order and had to send back. Plumber said so you have no toys in the toilet? Me and mom began laughing hysterically and said no and the plumber left.

So the extention # was #72 and that is the number you use for call forwarding..and the number I was given was the number all our calls were forwarded to.

Actually, that's inelegant and evil. Some of the stuff I read about in Underground by Suelette Dreyfuss, now THAT's clever.

Still, I hope you are able to deal with that idiot. :)

Meee tooo!

It is called a jailhouse scam...they are in jail and using the pay phone to scam people.....CRAZY!!

I was totally oblivious....it took me hours to connect our inability to receive incoming calls to the dumb collect call we received this morning...most of the people who we associate with could wind up in jail for different reasons....

it coulda been our buddy who usually winds up in the psych ward...rather than jail...
it coulda been...anyone.....I feel so ret*d for falling for the scam.....yee gads!

Advice: if you ever receive a collect call from jail and it turns out to be a stranger....ask them the name of the person they are calling on the behalf of.

That was my big mistake.
It was very early in the morning and I was groggy...

hopefully, I won't have to um...pay for all the calls..hopefully i can find the dumb piece of paper the number was written on...hopefully...um.....gee....hopefully...
I can alert people to this stupid scam.....I will contact various media sources and ask that they publish something to warn people of this scam
