Well by my definition if you are an adult human, you are either a man or a woman. Nothing else.

Well, whatever.

All I'm going to say (going by your terms) is that I would rather be a "guy" than a "man." But I don't need to be macho to be and feel like a man. 8) If you feel like a man, than you are a man and no one else has a say in the matter. Besides, being macho is so overrated anyway.

Bah, this is silly, do whatever you want. I'll be a man and leave. Oh, one more thing, to settle my point:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man

hm...

you got me thinking.

there WOULD be a reason, as to there IS a seperate word for "man" and "macho".

actually, ive witnessed several stereotypical übergeeks, one who lived with his grandmother in a secluded valley in the mountains here in norway, and collected old radios and knew every elvis song, thin and bony, huge glasses, thin hair, weird posture, strange sqeaky voice, the WHOLE PACKAGE

this was in the military, we got mandatory here, i went, stayed for 5 months, then went home early, i was fine tho, in the field, but in the barracks, that is 95% of the time (i was supply guy..) with the people, it was VERY energydemanding. the relations were okay, cus im a "funny guy", but all in all exhausting and depressing

this guy played out his part, as expected, by lagging behind, and thats from me, who lagged behind, and did everything slowly and clumsily (and im slow and clumsy, and finished long before him)

this guy redeemed all that, in the first week, for the rest of his time there, by:

getting up, and singing the crap out of everyone.
like a MAN!
goddamn, a booming voice and stuff

what about england they are men spiffing day for a cup of tea!

goes without saying. "cup of tea" is NOT very macho. north europeans, brits, scandinavians (like me), germans, are not very macho. the french hope that theyre macho, cus theyre semi-latinos, but they have no idea how wrong they are :)
well, they must have SOME idea.

yeah... nice try w the mustache pierre!

By real man do youmean alpha male, top dog, billy big bollocks?

If so don't confuse the latin, hispanic hysterical shouting and handbag swinging as being definitive of being male.

All that these people are doing is over compensating for their own self doubt, conversely as previously stated look to the english with their quiet enjoyment of a cup of tea, ie nothing to prove.

I think an easy rule of thumb to id real men is to look at countries that play rugby.

Rugby are for woman :)

How about the Turkish men.. hairy, masculin,
and loud :) Or the Moroccen ones

Anyway, my dad might have been a little macho
in my eyes...a big man, big hands with skin like
leather, deep voice and determend look, hair just
pulled back and cut short, always a zig in his mouth
and always working in dirty coveralls, and he would
whip your ass if you messed with him. I`ve seen him
pick grown men up by the neck and told them to quiet
down, right now! ..and they always did. But he was
in no way a violent man, he did not like to fight, but
he never backed down or took s**t either. He was born
in 1940 and by the time he was 17 he and one of his
brothers ran their own construction company 8O
thats pretty tuff to get done. And he never stopped
working.

In addition to that, he took good care of his family and
they always came first. Thats a man to me. My mom was
his first big love when he was 18 and they stuck togehter
for decades until he died in 1995. A real man.
*takes hat off*

ImTheGuyThatDidThat, in parts there is so much wrong with your mail I felt tempted to totally flame you.

However, you go on to say;

".... he took good care of his family and they always
came first. Thats a man to me."

I certainly can't see anyone argue with that, good call.

Oh, i was just kidding about the rugby are for woman,
its just that to me men dont run around and play with
balls. Such a waste of time. Boys play with balls, real
men dont, but thats just me. The keyword to me is
play, one plays football and one plays rugby, its
playing, just a silly game. Now for exampel boxing,
you dont play boxing, thats a real mans game.

----edit
i dont mean i refuse to play with a ball, who knows
what happpens in my garden - but i wouldn`t say
yes to having it as a job and getting paid alot to play
in front of other people for example, when i see that
i kinda think "get a job or grow up or something.."

as ive admitted in an earlyer reply here, i have synonymized "MAN" and "MACHO" and later realized that was an incorrect move on my part, since it is possible to be a MAN and not be MACHO.

by MAN i mean someone with at least a _potential_ for Alpha position. i am fully entitled to cultural generalization tho, for example the bouncing-around chinese, vs the korean DMZ soldiers, vs the hairy latinos in spain punching holes in walls over difficult women, vs semi-lisping peruvians, all these give off a cultural model, of what their idea of a MAN is

and in turn, i judge them all, by my own european stereotype.

stop making me analyze myself.
