Sometimes they migrate to warmer areas or to areas with more favorable water conditions if there is a change in climate or water levels rise or fall beyond acceptable flamingo limits. They like to fly at night at high altitudes to avoid predators (i.e. eagles).

Yeah, that's true. Where's the farthest north they'll (the American Flamingos) go? I know of one that went up to the one of the farthest north points of Florida during Hurricane Ike, but I wonder if they'll go further up than that.

Two American Flamingos were documented to have been at Grays Harbor, Washington in 1975.

Wow, that's crazy! I wonder why they went that far north. I just wish they would come to Indiana, but there's absolutely no salt water here at all for them. Tons of fresh water though...

Personaly I find them to look a bit scary, but I don't realy know much about them at all.

Fun Flamingo Fact of the Day:

Flamingoes are the some of the only creatures designed to survive in the caustic environment of a volcanic lake. They are often associated with the Phoenix which is a part of many cultures. The Phoenix, an immortal bird, is consumed by flames then rises from the ashes. The word "flamingo" is also associated with fire and is derived from "flamenco," from Spanish through Latin - the root meaning "flaming".

Although flamingos are tropical or subtropical, there is one species that lives high in the Andes Mountains of South America - it has yellow legs and feet.

I wonder if anyone else has ever uncovered any other flamingo species besides the main six of them.

(And if anyone's wondering, those are Greater, American / Caribbean, Chilean, Andean, James's, and Lesser)
