I was wondering if anyone played Second Life. Share your experiences, tips, or whatever here!

I like going to dance clubs and marvel how slow my framerate is. I often visit cyberpunk or futuristic looking places, because I enjoy the setting. I also sometimes go to a place called Bodhi and gaze at the scenery.

An experience of mine that I occasionally run into, would be the confusion people have when looking at my avatar. Ive had several comments stating that my avatar is female...whereas its clear that they are wrong. Yes, the body is smaller, and the face is feminine, but I dont see how anyone could confuse it for a female. Most commonly, male avatars have very broad shoulders with large muscles, and female avatars are very thin with small waists. I guess any femininity in the face, and they automatically conclude its a girl without looking at anything else. This doesnt bother me, its just something im confused about.

Here is my avatar in its current stage of development. I say current stage, because im constantly trying to improve it. My goal is to model it after me, but its taking a long time. Ill get there eventually. The body is nearly finished (I just have to tweak the upper body and maybe head size/shape), but the face looks off. If anyone has any tips, id really appreciate it. The first picture is me, and the others are my SL avatar. Tell me what you think.

I just tried to sign up, but found that I would need a new video card, since the site says the one that I have is inadequate.

hartzofspace in most cases you can ignore the inadequate video card
warning, I can run SL on my 3 year old laptop with very inadequate
video, and it still works, it may take longer to load but is still playable.

Second Life is generally boring compared to other games, but I think I would enjoy it much more if my frame rate were higher. I play it mostly because I love editing my avatar.

I average about 4-7 fps. Thats absolutely horrible, I know. I really need a computer upgrade, but because of my motherboard, I might as well upgrade the whole thing, which will cost me like $750-900.

Oh I didnt know WP had an island. Ill defenatly check it out. Wait...is it an island or just a group? Ah whatever, ill just search it. :)

Tried it for a while, i made a NCC1701 Enterprise-A model.

Made a house. And another one.
Took a look around the world (scifi "museum" was quite intresting).
Got bored with all the pr0n and crap content.
Logged out permanently.

I have a go at the shape making in SL. I specialise in female shapes though, but I can still offer a little advice on correct proportions etc.

Most male character in SL seem to have very broad shoulders and large muscles. I think its an ego thing.
I, on the other hand try to replicate my body and face as close I possibly can. I view myself as decently attractive, so I want to use my own self as a model for my avatar then tweak it to make myself look more attractive, but still extremely similar to my true self.

Ill try to get a full body shot of myself and my avatar, both in the same pose. I even have almost the exact same shirt and jeans that my avatar commonly wears :). My eyes and hair are different though.

Well, I muddled around on SL last night. I found that it worked fine, with the vid card that I have. I still find it all very confusing, though. Like, having to remember so many things at one time, such as how to make my avatar walk, run, gesture, etc. I hope it gets better, or I'm gonna quit. :?

What do you mean exactly? The controls are extremely easy to remember.
You can use the arrow keys to move in their respective directions, or w,a,s, and d the same way as the arrow keys.

I tried Second Life for a while. I never worked out how to talk, but flying and walking was fine. I found the concept fascinating, and watched several videos online about how it grew/developed and its economy etc, but the "reality" of it was disappointing.

The reasons I stopped were that so much of it was so empty, and that the landscape wasn't continuous, like real countryside, ( except for the very oldest section, which is tiny compared to the space SL takes up now, and a few isolated areas/theme park like places ), so exploring felt very pointless and unreal.

I don't think that they should have allowed people to build such different things next to each other, and that there should have been more "infrastructure" of roads, rivers, etc to maintain a sense of a "real world". I went on the two railways which still work, over short stretches, and it seems such a shame that the segmentation of territory stops these being built everywhere.

I prefered Runescape, for four months, because there was no download and the countryside was reasonably continuous with lots of fun things to explore and find out. You can socialise on that too if you're interested in that side of things; I preferred to just wander around. :)

Yeah, I was really disapointed in SL when I first saw it for myself. Before I played it, it seemed like it was one big world that people could build buildings and open stores, just like in real life. I thought Second Life would look just like real life (not graphics quality, of course). I expected cities and towns with all these roads and buildings. One big world. Thats not the real SL at all. The advertising is misleading.

Well, I agree with ouinon and Mist01. I just wandered around aimlessly, and interacted with the one other person that I saw briefly. And what I meant about confusion with the controls, is that I have dyscalculia and tend to get things reversed, so that they then become confusing. OTH, I wish I could look like my avatar-tall dark, male, and handsome!

I chose a male avatar too :D ( the one that looks very androgynous, maybe japanese/anime "young male" ). All the female ones looked so silly/uncool/female!
