So when I was about 14 I had my first period, I had another a few months later, and then it was over a year before I had my next one. I've typically gone around 4-6 months between periods on average, although am now on the pill that means I don't get any periods at all.

I don't see it a problem since periods are horrible anyway, but I've always wondered why I've never had regular periods and if this could be in some way linked to having AS as I don't know of any other women that have this. I'm too embarrassed to ask my doctor.

Anyone else experienced this?

It's generally a hormone issue, of which there are many. It's something you should really talk to your doctor about. It could be nothing serious at all, or it could be damaging to your health. I don't mean to scare you, it's much more likely that it's something that's not serious, but it's important that your doctor know.

Similar story here. Started at 14, had almost a year break between my first and second. For first few years they were very random from 3 weeks to 3 months. At 18 they became regular. At 35 they all but stopped.

Very stressful times of my life have stopped my period.

Some other factors that effect the regularity of periods are excessive weight loss and weight gain, peri menopause, cysts, cancer, etc, etc.

Best to talk to the doctor and rule out anything serious.

Infrequent monthly gift topic

My oldest daughter has always had infrequent periods, and she is sterile. :(

you could have PCOS. Perhaps ask the doctor or gynaecologist.

Wow yeah, I got mine at almost fifteen, and didn't get it until six months later, and then two months after that and now it varies to being at two weeks apart, or two months. And unlike most people I don't have physically painful PMT, only the cranky part!!

Are you underweight at all? I heard regular period doesn't happen until a girl reach 100lbs or so. Which for me means never, until after I had a baby and gained some weight. Now it's like a clock. If you're big framed that weight limit can be much higher for you than 100 lbs. I know a girl who needs to be at least 120lbs to have any period at all.

For me, yes. From using up too much brain, I like to think 8O I eats heaps and healthily, and exercise, but I look like a stick. Maybe that's why.

It's a matter of body fat. You need to have a certain percentage of body fat to get your cycle. I think it has to do with the fact that if you're too skinny, your body can't support a baby, and so it turns off the cycles.

I'm guessing low body fat. I have the same "problem" (note my inverted commas; I feel much healthier when NOT having periods).

I had these same symptoms as well...eventually I was diagnosed with a prolactinoma (type of pituitary tumor)...I actually went to a chinese medicine doctor and he began telling me about all these symptoms I had and how they were related...he knew nothing about me...just looked at my tongue...with that I began researching and found this information online about pituitary tumors...I went to my OBGYN and told him I needed him to check me for this...he did...it was finally diagnosed after more than 12yrs of me going to doctors, getting hormones, etc. to get regular periods, blah, blah...

I weigh just over 14 stone (no idea what that is in pounds) so I doubt that would explain it in my situation. I'm definitely not underwight
