At what age were you (officially) diagnosed?

I know this has been posted before and I have gone through all the replies on that thread, but I thought a poll would be easier and more conclusive.

I am doing my EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) on girls with AS and I would really appreciate some stats. Please feel free to share your diagnosis story as it would greatly help me in my research.

To get the ball rolling, I was diagnosed only last week at the age of 18 (still waiting for the paper work to be done...). I was originally diagnosed with depression and was sent to CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service) and whist doing CBT my psychiatrist suggested that I get a diagnosis for AS. It took a while and a few blips (like one doctor who disagreed with the unofficial diagnosis) but it's eventually almost gone through.

But I was over 55 when I was diagnosed, and you have made no provision for people over 50.

I do wonder if there are any women here who were diagnosed over 50. It wouldn't surprise me.

In a poll like this, it is probably a good idea to make the last group "45 years +" or something like that.

I was 23, first I was self-diagnosed and then I went to a psychiatrist to confirm it.

About 8-9, probably 8. I can't remember.

I was diagnosed when I was 16 years old.

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 5 in kindergarten. But just recently diagnosed with aspergers.

I was 14 years old when diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. I was also diagnosed with a learning disability at 7 and ADD at 13.

It was in 1994, so I was 3 (I think). I was diagnosed with Childhood Autism, but the diagnosis changed to aspergers because I guess they felt that I was not really as severe as they anticipated. That and aspergers can soemtimes be a more useful diagnosis (depends on where you go, I guess).

And, well, now I'm autistic again because of the new criteria, tee hee...medical definitions....

When I was 21. A friend who has AS recongised that I did also and ordered me to go and get diagnosed.

Official diagnosis: Age 22.

First time a professional used the label Asperger's with me: Age 13. She was someone who could not make an official diagnosis and said that I probably had Asperger's, that she couldn't diagnosis me because she didn't know enough about the spectrum to be able to make diagnoses on the spectrum, and that I needed help from only people who know about the autistic spectrum. I wasn't officially diagnosed at age 13 because I was female, because she recommended not pursuing an official diagnosis because of the bias against diagnosing females.

I was diagnosed earlier this year, at 31. I began to suspect I had the condition when I was studying it at university. If I hadn't written a thesis about autistic traits, I probably never would have thought I might have AS.

One thing to consider is the current age of your respondents, as trends in age of diagnosis would be changing over time (i.e. older women would not be likely to have been diagnosed early, as the condition was not really known about/understood, especially in women. Younger women are more likely to have had an earlier diagnosis).
