She was nice but extremely... NT-ish? I don't have a word for it.
I have a friend who is also very NT in a similar way and we both have to work very hard at not accidentally upsetting each other.

I think she was worried about upsetting us or coming across as judgemental, which was why she added hearts to elaborate.

I can relate. It seems easy to trigger some members. Some "ex" members did try very hard to have me removed for precisely this reason.

Infact its more educational for NTs to spend time on WP to learn to be sensitive to people with neurodevelopmental challenges than the other way around,

Yeah, some of us tend to be a bit sensitive.
And some ask questions on matters NTs think are so universally understood that we are surely being sarcastic, but we're not.
Then on the occasion when we are actually being sarcastic, it is taken as literal and hence assumed we're a bit dumb / childlike.
Some just cover their difficulties up with a display of massive intellect that makes everyone else feel dumb.
Oh, I could go on...
The posting styles of my fellow autists are a wonderful study in the diversity within the spectrum.
They ought to make time on WP a part of every psychology course

As far as I know, I'm the only NT who regularly posts on WP. Teach51 is the only other NT who is a semi-regular poster,

My one direct ftf connection to autism is my daughter who is moderate-high functioning (depending on the day).

I'll let Teach speak for herself (she nearly cut my head off doing it once) but she's in a relationship with an autistic male and has autistic friends.

Any efforts to boost the number of participating NTs here on WP? Two known NTs contributing to WP falls (way too) short!

There aren't that many NTs on WP outside of the parent thread (where I started). I know I am the only regular NT here on WP in certain topic threads such as news, friendship, general and a few others.

May I suggest posting this call on the parent thread.

On a similar note I've tried reaching out to my local autism associations here in Melbourne and found the local aspies chicken out from meeting an NT. I also notice most aspies here on WP don't find what I post of sufficient interest to respond (let alone form interactions/friendships). I have been even accused of click bait to draw attention (although 99% of what I post is based on news/publications and not my personal opinion).

But it is what it is...apsieland
I accept you guys for being who you are....

Thank-you for mentioning the 'Parents Discussion' thread.

As mentioned, I'm seeking resources appropriate for HFA adults - quite different from parent's perspectives. Most resources for adults are orientated around developmentally disabled adults. The AANE.org examples for adults seems to demonstrate favorable outcomes - where are AANE.org experiences here on WP??

Just before the pandemic, I become acquainted with an arts instructor who is experienced with teaching both developmentally disabled adults, and NTs. My instructor took an interest in the concerns of HFA adults - hence, this is better than nothing!

In your post, you mentioned the city of Melbourne. Is this Melbourne, Australia?

I'm probably not the person then as I have little to no experience with adults on the spectrum ftf, I worked with one Aspie (who told me) and other than a few quirks he functioned like a NT. My wife also worked with a lady who was (we suspect) AS whom i briefly had an acquaintance. She was unable to look at me in the eyes and spoke in a monotone voice) but otherwise was functional,

Most (well 99%) of my experience with adults on the spectrum is online on WP.

Yes Melbourne Australia.

My mum watched all my online interactions as a kid.

As an adult less so. I'm entitled to privacy.

Cyber is here to help his (your if you're reading this Cyber!) young daughter so it's slightly different to being nosy about an adult child.

He reminds me of my mum a lot because he's an autistic person's parent who doesn't make it all about him! :)

I wouldn't like an NT to come on here on behalf of an autistic adult without the adult's consent & knowledge. Esp a HFA/aspie person which I guess is the only experience I know. I would feel like the autistic person was being spoken over and spied upon.

Just my opinion though. Probably cos I have very strong boundaries/need for privacy etc but trouble setting them.

From the perspectives of an adult with High Functioning Autism (HFA):

NTs seeking to assist adults on the Autism Spectrum might have found and investigated WP; yet may have been discouraged out of confusion in understanding a rather well.......confusing WP environment.

It's natural for newer WP users/members to focus mainly on the 'General Autism Discussion Forum' - the main WP forum is an active, hectic forum on WP - "It is what it is!"

The WP subfourms are well slower paced, and hence might offer clearer insights for NTs seeking to help adults.

Scroll down the list of WP subforums (highlighted in blue), and investigate the following forums as examples:

* In the 'Coping in Life' Forums - 'Social Skills & Making Friends.'

* In the 'Topical Discussion' - 'Art, Writing and Music' Forum is an example - that is the arts have proven to be "icebreakers of sorts" for the Autism Spectrum.

* In the 'Age/Gender' related discussions - the 'In-Depth Adult-Life Discussion' Forum provides important insights from older Wp members.

Many of us here on WP look forward to perspectives from those awesome NTs wanting to better understand the Autism Spectrum.

Reassessing original post (OP): Included in OP are discussion-threads (WP sub-forums) whose pace, dynamics, etc. might better curb confusion for people new to WP.

I strongly feel that impressions of WP offering confusing, cumbersome environments esp. to those new to WP can become like a self fulfilling prophecy of sorts - that viscous cycle of sorts whose dynamics are reflected here on well............WP.

Alot of the small things to collectively curb confusion here on WP e.g., focusing on the less active WP sub-forums might just prove encouraging; for NTs experienced with helping people on the Autism Spectrum (AS), as well as those of us with AS.

In short, to collectively curb confusion here on WP offers those much needed dynamics!

Yeah agree....I wouldn't talk about my daughter if she was an adult without first checking. Ive told her about WP but its not caught her interest yet. She's also likely to blurt out private stuff as well

It's best to refocus on the original purpose of this discussion-thread to encourage that follow-through - on proactive approaches regarding what can best assist HFA adults.

I wonder if NTs working with autistics find a forum full of us a bit intimidating?

I mean, I'm just thinking that maybe WP attracts those at the more linguistically advanced and/or high-IQ end, and also, many are passionate in their denouncement of certain therapies and language used about autistics, which might clash with the NT specialist's education/training? With some members tending not to hold back for fear of hurting feelings, the NT might feel attacked.

Maybe we could have a specific forum intended to draw in NTs, where they might feel some safety in numbers? Perhaps with some specific rules in there to help stop us scaring them off? Just a thought.

At the moment I guess there wouldn't be enough NTs to make it work, but maybe of we targeted professionals like "Autism professionals discussion" or something, we might get the academics and researches and autism support workers come along. That would be cool.

Actually there was a NT British academic who was lurking here a few years ago trying to recruit participants for her research study.

I asked her to join us as our members would benefit from her experiences but she ran away.
