Although I have mentioned this in a recent thread, these 6 are the key symptoms of autism:-

1. Social impairment OR social awkwardness

2. Sensory issues

3. Meltdowns/shutdowns/overload

4. Special interests

5. Like routine/sameness/repetitiveness

Usually, being able to cognitively figure out a social situation later, but sometimes (perhaps because of anxiety) not being able to figure out a social situation in "real time."

1) intense focus on interests (there seems to be a "concrete" element to these)

2) sensory issues (hyper and hypo)

3) stimming

4) patchy social skills relative to NTs (among my ASD friends the exchange of information is understood, soliloquys are welcome, contacting people when in need sometimes 10-20 years apart is appreciated...)

5) meltdowns or a very "small" controlled life (I live big and have frequent meltdowns, my BFF lives very small and doesn't melt down)

I try to have rules of thumb, such as: If someone needs space, go ahead and give them space.

(plenty of time to mull over later whether I was at fault, or whether they were, or some combo thereof)
