for example
when I memorize a phone number, I memorize the pattern like a grid on my phone keypad. Does any one else do that or do your fingers remember the number even if you cant recall it mentally?

I was wondering if this was an aspie thing.

My kinetic memory is often better than my long term memory. If I am playing a video game, I have a difficult time explaining to others how to do something, but am good at the motions.
Same with phone numbers. It's easier to dial the number than tell someone what the number is, sometimes.

Actually I memorize the sounds and re-translate back to numbers when I need to use the number.

I'm similar with phone numbers. If I happen to accidentally think about the actual numbers I can completely screw up and not know what to type. I've had trouble with a cash machine and my pin number before because of that. And also with the grocery store card to save money.

I agree. Though with cell phones, I don't bother putting many numbers to memory. I do have a password at work that I'm prone to memorize the motion of keying in the password rather than the keys.

Sometimes I memorize by pattern but more often I memorize by association, a trick used by the circus like memory shows. For example, about a year ago I wanted to remember the name of the manager of an apartment complex where I was thinking of moving to. She was an Asian woman named Nofi. So I simply reminded myself that the one thing you would never hear any apartment manager say to you was "no fee". Now I will remember her name until the day that I die whether I want to or not.

In the end it turned out well that I did not move. If I had moved I would have never become so intrigued by an Aspie I met at my current location, even though I have never been able to communicate with him (he has severe communications and avoidance problems). It was that intrigue that led me to begin reading about AS and that is waht led me to the realization and later diagnosis that I myself had AS.

To me, a phone number kind of has a texture.

I can see the numbers, as I think in pictures and images.

All the credit belongs to the Aspie who has intrigued me so much for the past 15 months. I will feel forever indebted to him for unknowingly leading me to this realization as he did. Unfortunately I will never be able to express my thanks to him because he is so extremely avoidant towards everybody and now towards me as well. I may be partially to blame though, because after handing him a short note of friendship three months ago with my phone and email in case he should ever want to chat, I began to avoid him to let the decision be his alone with no undue pressure from me. He mirrors me strongly at times and may only be copying my own avoidant behavior. This is ripping my heart apart because I felt such a close connection to this Aspie as being so much like myself and because he used to be so unusually nice to me and always very happy to see me. So now on the eve of Valentines Day when I should be happy to have a potential friend for the first time in years, I find that I am about to begin to avoid him completely in order to avoid the pain that has resulted. It is such a sad, sad situation. I will probably have to try to retreat into all of my previous interests once again in order to avoid the non-stop thoughts and pain.

Ho ho.

Do I memorize by patterns.

I memorize barely poorly, but patterns increase the odds, and most of my consciousness is noting , comparing, analyzing, using patterns.

Totally an aspie thing, I use the pattern 5 3 3 to record fone no's, it's a drive to see symetry :D

I do things by feel and movement. So to remember a keyboard shortcut I would have to do it and observe what I did before I could let someone else know how to do it. I also do quite a lot of things I've noticed with my eyes closed, because I instead just focus on how it feels and movement.

Is this also by patterns?? I don't know.

I can relate to this sort of thing. I remember once with a phone number as well for this lady and she even said something about me being pattern thinker. She told me she said that because she thought it was a good thing.

I do not remember my phone pin number unless I have a number pad in front of me. I was at a cash dispenser once, withdrawing some money, and when I entered the number it said it was incorrect. I thought I maybe mistyped it, so I was extra careful the next time, but it was still incorrect. Then I actually looked down and saw that the number pad is flipped, so that was why I was entering the number wrong :P
