do you have obsessions that last a lifetime, or do you have a different one every few years? how long do your obsessions last?
i'm obsessed with knowing what people i know would do if they werent afraid of the consequences. i keep thinking about it, fantasizing about it. if they werent afraid of being caught, if they knew for sure they wouldnt be caught, would they shoplift?
i know this is a very strange obsession, and i dont even know if it qualify as an obsession. i'm also obsessed with animals. i love them. animals and nature.
what's your obsession and how long did it last? what was your previous obsession? do you have more than one?

I've loved writing since I was able to put down words, but I don't know if I'd call it an obsession. I can't shut off my brain and stop it from coming up with ideas, but I don't have trouble focusing on other things.

I do occasionally have a much more intense, brief obsession with things like TV shows and novels. I'll have an episode or a chapter a few times a day even if I already know what happens, and will devour everything I can find on it. Having to do something else is a chore, but I can also feel myself painfully burning out and becoming exhausted. Those last a few weeks. Wish I could direct them towards my work and writing...

Yes. I have always been obsessed with reading, but what I read changes.

My special interests seem to change roughly every 5 years but they may last a bit shorter or longer than that. Some though, manage to become a part of everyday life. And sometimes I go back to old ones as well.

I probably have about 10 "special interests", but at any given time 1 or 2 are dominant. So I'll spend a month obsessing over Arcade Fire, a month obsessing over Doctor Who, a month obsessing over Pokémon, a month over the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and so forth. Right now I think I'm between MCU and Damon Albarn.

The answer is "yes" I have obsessions that last a lifetime, and those that come and go (as well as some that morph, and merge).

No, I don't think so, my fiction is usually the first thought in the morning and the last thought in the night.

One obsession I have that has stayed with me is working out. Mostly because it helps with anxiety and I want to be healthy. I also enjoy helping people find a good workout routine for themselves. Running out in the forest is my favorite, I do that one regularly.

Another is drawing, because that's how I release my emotions and convey a lot of weird stuff that goes on in my head that I can't find words for. One of my favorites is drawing patterns for clothing.

Then there's ice cream, and thinking of things I could add to the ice cream so it tastes better. I love ice cream, and frozen yogurt too.

Obsessions that come and go: collecting stuffed animals, playing Ragnarok Online, Pokemon, cars, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Buddhism.

It varies a lot, everything from more or less lifetime to weekly obsessions.

Most important thing is that it's sufficiently interesting and absorbing to occupy me in the present.

interests of mine tend to be near life long and have only been changed due to being stopped by something or someone.
for example, after being sectioned in an intelectual disability hospital last year, had to give up horse riding for a special olympics club because had put on so much weight from four months of inactivity that felt itd be wrong to ride again and have been put off from going back to equestrianism, but am now an athlete for the same club on their swim team; had only began swimming just over a month ago after a lifetime of severe sensory issues with water being unable to go near it without severe pain, due to having a lot of sensory integration therapy in the hospital am now able to do it when wearing a shorty wet suit.
swimming is the main interest of mine,do it three times a week with SO swim training being twice a week.

animals, sensory rooms and adult soft play have always been major interests of mine, certain PC based FPS computer games used to be on the interest list but the stupid hospital lost the gaming mouse of mine.

Some I've had since I was tiny kid, others were major obsessions for years but are gone. I was just reading about the Kentucky Derby and reminded that I used to have a special interest in horse racing, not betting very often, but just obsessed with it. Back then I had no idea there was such a thing as special interests. Man, the money I spent on Daily Racing Forms!

I don't really have obsessions, besides occasionally double-checking if my doors are locked. Obsessions come from OCD, and special interests come from autism, but I don't see them as entirely separate categories in the minds of actual people.

My special interests change fairly often, as in every few years, but I recycle them. Anime, music, and puns seem to recur more often than anything else.

ocd also more or less come from autism. we on the spectrum are very prone to having ocds, me too. special interests are nice, make your life richer, can help advance your career. but ocds are just a bummer.

OCD and Autistic obsession are two completely different things. I've been told they're distinguished by OCD being when you feel forced to do something non-functional almost against your will that causes you nothing but frustration and pain, while Autistic obsession is something you rather get pleasure and relaxed from doing (otherwise wouldn't do it!). OCD is unrelated to whether someone has autism or not.
