I just made up an analogy that explains why I hate being categorized. Let’s imagine I like mangos. Maybe I’m super obsessed with them, maybe I just like to eat them once in a while. Since I like mangos, someone decides to get me mango flavored gum. I think most people can agree that doesn’t sound great. At least not as good as a real mango. It’s just not a good combination.

When I chew gum I prefer mint or the classic bubblegum flavor rather than weird fruit flavors. I think most people can understand that as well.

Let’s imagine this person who gives me the mango flavored gum expects me to love it. If I don’t like it, I get accused of being rigid and closed minded. “You love mangos and bubblegum. You should be into mango flavored gum even more!” they tell me. This is how I feel NTs are in general. They don’t accept that I have preferences and that some things just don’t work for me.

A better analogy might be...

"You like chocolate. And you like beefsteak. So...you should LOVE having chocolate syrup poured onto your beefsteak!" :D

Fondue steak....yum. I'd try mango flavoured gum. I'm open to trying new things when it comes to gum and food.

I'd prefer mango over mint, personally.

Labels are effective when describing collective behavior. But when it comes to individuals, it would be foolish to label them

Sounds to me like a good analogy to marketing - "you like mangoes, so you'll like this mango-flavoured gum."

But I've known it to be applicable to the NT-ASD thing. A neurotypical Relate counsellor said I'd be fine at work once I was diagnosed with ASD because "they'll put you in a room on your own." She knew a bit about ASD, but I think she underestimated how much she didn't know about it. I benefit from and enjoy a bit of solitary confinement, but without contact with others I get lonely and depressed. Luckily they did no such thing to me. I think NTs are more likely to be glib than ASDers, because we tend to be more thorough and detailed in our thinking style. At least, I do.

I agree that mango flavored gum sounds like it would be bad, even though I like actual mangos. Then again, I don't like chewing gum. :)

I was tasting mango infused rum in my local bottle shop, it blew my mind but it's $53 a bottle

I've never seen any type of chewing gum on sale that didn't have something dodgy in it. Mostly unnatural sweeteners, but some gum is made of plastic. I tried something called Glee Gum once, as the sellers claimed it was very healthy and natural. Unfortunately it was sweetened with xylitol, which might be a natural sweetener but it gave me flatulence. I came to no harm but discontinued the gum. Not the gleeful experience I'd hoped for. No warnings on the pack either. I've since heard that gum is often sweetened with similar sugar alcohols, and that they're toxic to dogs and cats. Again, the sellers don't usually warn about that. And contrary to what gum sellers used to tell us, gum is bad for the teeth because chewing it puts an unnatural strain on them.

I don't exactly like chewing gum anyway, but the tobacco industry duped me into smoking tobacco when I was much too young to resist the ads - I had to use nicotine gum to help get me off that, and the gum became an important stim, as well as being physically addictive. And it's not cheap.

I quite like good mangoes but like most fruits they're too messy for me to be bothered with. Seedless grapes are much better.

Properly ripened mangoes are "orgasmically" good. ironically Mangoes were never eaten in Australia till the 1960s. Mango trees in north tropical Australia used to drop their fruit and they were left to rot.
