I don't do that, unless it's eating the cake first, and the frosting last as that's my favorite part. My mom who isn't on the spectrum is one who eats one thing at a time.

I always place the plate with the main dish directly in front of me, e.g. the meat, or fish. From here always eat one forkful from each item starting with the main dish and moving in a clockwise manner. Obviously this is the only correct way to eat

I like to go from least favourite to favourite in order. But if I like all things the same then I like to have a bit of everything on the fork at the same time, or 2 things at once, I like the mix of flavours.

Yes I do it, I tend to start with my least favourite item and then work my way on. Tony Attwood claims that this type of eating is common in the AS community.

I know some people want freedom to stim, I say I also want freedom to eat my dinner which ever way I like. As long as my table manners are OK and I do not act up at the dinner table I think I should be free to eat which ever way I like !

I don't even eat full meals, I only prepare and eat one food at a time. With eating rather low-calorie in the first place, this means I kind of eat all day.

I also eat one food at a time, never thought it was a quirk, I thought it was a preference.
The day I went to college I finally experienced the freedom of eating whatever and whenever I wanted. It was such a relief.

For 18 years mealtimes in my parent's home were a time of constant stress. Not only I ate one thing at a time, I also ate only products of certain brands.
One type of yogurt, one brand of feta cheese, because the rest had a very bad odour.
I also hate the smell of pork and lamb, goat cheese makes my stomach turn but my mother used to say I was a spoiled drama queen and should shut up and eat whatever is put in front of me.
My dad, also with AS, could not stand the sound of cutlery, mealtimes with my family were solemnly quiet except for my mother, insisting I should take this or that. Eventually my dad stopped eating with us because we were too noisy.
I had never examined my eating preferences in the light of AS. Now I am gaining more understanding about myself and my past.
Thanks for the thread.

I used to do this more when I was little - for instance, if I had a dish involving meat or fish, I'd eat everything but that, then collect it all on my fork and eat it last. Now I tend to eat more or less normally, but if a meal has something like gravy or a sauce of the sort that can congeal, it makes me feel sick - especially if all of the food gets a soggy coating of it and is mixed together. I tend to avoid meals like that.

I used to get told off by my parents for smelling food before I ate it. Apparently it's 'rude'. I just think it's sensible. If I don't like how it smells, then I probably won't like how it tastes.

I do this too! Is it an Asperger's thing? I prefer to eat individual parts of the meal seperately if I can. Usually from my least favourite thing to my most favourite.

I don't have to do it to the extent that I won't be able to eat a mixed meal like stir fry, though. Luckily.

Same here. I also don't have this to where I can't eat something mixed together (I'd only do that if it's something I like mixed, of course).

I do some other quirky things when eating that people find funny, but I never really noticed until they brought it up. For instance, I will eat a burger or sandwich in a pattern. Like into a circle or a square.

I prefer to either have only one thing or place everything on separate plates. Yes, I realize that is annoying, and yes, I do wash dishes so I really know how annoying that is, thank you.
I like stir fry though :) especially with tofu, bok choy, and watercress.

I thought everyone ate like that. I guess I never paid much attention to the way other people eat. I eat one thing at a time as well. I eat my least favorites first then my favorites so I'll have my favorite flavor in my mouth.

I also really hate it when my food touches my other food.

Yes, I do. Always have. I had no idea other people thought this was odd until it was brought up to me once.

I also don't like two foods to touch each other on the plate. If I cut up a piece of fruit I wipe its juice away before cutting up another piece of fruit and putting it on the plate. I even wash the knife after cutting the first piece. Now that's just mad. No idea why I do these things.

I also used to eat food sequentially when I was a child, but as an adult, I've discovered the joys of random eating. When I was younger, I didn't like food mixed; for instance, I couldn't understand how so many kids liked peanut butter and jelly sandwiches- I could eat only peanut butter sandwiches, or only jelly sandwiches. My Mom also couldn't put spaghetti sauce right on the spaghetti, because I wanted to have my pasta plain....etc.

This is SO like me, even now. I often have to get extra plates, for salad, or if there is any runny food on the main plate. Another pet peeve: something solid floating around in my drink. Sometimes it can be very difficult getting a bread crumb out of a drink! I have been known to throw out a whole drink and pour myself a new, clean one.
