The NYSED will only do anything when it is sued, and then only to get out of the lawsuit.

I once read where a parent in long island took their school district to federal court using a little known supreme court decision to short circuit the due process procedures (she could prove that her son was in immediate and irrepairable harm) and the lawyer put the NYSED, New York State, and the governor on a defendents because they refused to enforce the law. The state attorney general met with her attorney in an effort to get out of the case. The deal ended up being that the State agencies was not to help the district in any way, in return, they were removed as defendents.

how would one go about putting together an action committee? I don't have the first clue. Any ideas?

Well, it can be done autonomously, like squatting in an abandoned building after getting a group of people with the same ideas together. However, this may or may not work for many aspies, but the Internet can offer quite a bit of choices, as well. An action committee can be formed in a variety of ways, though. It's just a gathering of people with similar ideas who are pressing towards some common goal, and then use the resources of the system to try to make these goals possible. The problem is gaining resources, and some whom are anarchists just take them, such as by squatting in abandoned buildings. Another problem is money and fundraising. How does one go about those? Well, then you need to find supporters. All of this, need I say, can't be done just by one individual, and a good action commitee can only work if the takes are divided amongst the members, and that the members are willing to make their dreams become a reality.

It may be quite much for an aspie, really ... None of us are comfortable in group settings, though a few of us may be able to work in such a setting if there is a good support system in place.

Another thing is to try to find supporters of our case that are willing to fight for us. The disability community, which exists in a variety of committees out in the real world, may be willing to provide support.

Also, local autism societies or aspie groups would be a nice place to talk about something like this, or at least just bring it up and see what the others think. This can include our supporters, not just aspies, but our supporters, say their parents or just people who want to get involved, such as people whom may be close to an aspie or whatever.

Okay, that is true, given that the United States is an overwhelmingly litigious society. Litigation hardly works, and if it does work, it tends to take a very long time to get anything done. A litigious society, though very much hated by the business community (unless it appeals to them), is still the number one choice, because business knows it can hold things up for years in courts. That is why progess is extremely slow, and that ensures that the system as we know it is well protected. As long as things move slow, the opposition knows that it can thrust things in if there is ever a political opponent change. Politicians change considerably in many cases, and that is something that the business community counts on, because a different politician may be a sigh of relief for them. In other words, if you work within the system, you're doomed. But, who says you have to work within the system?

It could be argued that a "Joe Clark" type of approach to this matter might be appropriate. It could also be argued that a front be formed signifying our rights, and then that we demand what we seek regardless of the overall costs or consequences. Remember, a lot of us are being treated unfairly and are having trouble surviving in a variety of different instances, so it is imperative. We need to make life miserable for those whom are trying to oppress us, if that is what it takes. Let's hope it doesn't come to that point, but if you operate solely within the system itself, you are not going to see any results, and those that you do see are only going to be very moderate, maybe something like ... "Well, what we're gonna do is help out the extremely gifted, like those with IQs over 150."

Check up on and research how some students and supporters are banning together to end the idea of the SST and CAT, tests which have nothing to do with intelligence but rather to flush out "abnormals" from the system.

There are actually groups who have been trying to get this place closed down. And people have sued but it has not done much. With the internet this place is getting more and more publicity though and their practices are being questioned. I would do some research on the internet and see if you can find the names of some of the organizations opposed to this place.
