Shopping isn't a potentially wonderful experience, it's just a necessary evil like going to the lavatory only less private.

LOL I like this. So true.

I don't like shopping (except, as noted above, for books and games). I have started to find the experience amusing though, watching the NTs walking around buying things that they only want because society conditions them into wanting them. I mean, I buy books and games because I enjoy them. NTs will buy cosmetics that won't actually improve their appearance, expensive clothes that aren't very comfortable or especially nice looking, anything made by Apple, pop music... in short, they buy things because other people are buying the same things, because the TV tells them to.

I know that Aspies buy these things as well, but generally I think it's an NT trait to follow the crowd (or consciously go against it) whereas Aspies often disregard the crowd entirely. If an Aspie buys an iPod, he buys it for the features or service or because he finds it easier to use than other MP3 players. If an NT buys it, he buys it because it is an iPod.

Holy crap.....you're like my shopping twin! I agree with this exactly 100%.

I feel so deceived when my girlfriend says "Lets go get X from X" & we end up "shopping" for 2 or 3 hours & getting a whole car-load of stuff.

I guess one of the reasons is that other people don't usually have a problem with crowds, so it's hard for them to understand what they're dragging us through. Mobile phones are the only thing I've found that help - I don't feel so guilty about opting out if it's only for a while, and with cellphone contact I can re-join the fray when I'm ready, whereas without them opting out is likely to last the whole afternoon.

Shopping for food is boring. The worst part is going to stores that don't have a self-checkout lane. Then you have to listen to the cashier ramble on and on as they ask you small-talk questions.

I can, however, spend an hour or two looking around a bookstore (usually in the manga section) or game store (looking for a good JRPG).

I'm glad I lived long enough to enjoy the commonality of two things: Self checkouts and online commerce. Until those wonderful revolutions in the shopping experience, my existence was more spartan. Now I can obtain what's "nice to have" without waiting for it to be a gift  (The Kindle, too = revolutionary)

I'm not trying to stand out but I love shopping and looking for great deals. I find shopping online easier and cheaper too.
