Reaction when people talk about autism around you
Normally most of the people who talk about it around me have no clue what they're on about but think they're experts, so my usual reaction is *facepalm*.
If they do know something, I'm pleasantly surprised. I might even talk to them about it.

My attitude tries to be, "forgive them for they know not of what they speak".
My friends (really the friends of my one friend) tease me about it sometimes,
but I understand (as a rule of thumb, not conceptually) that they are not doing
it to me mean. I think they are uncomfortable with it and it's their way of making
light of it.
My head starts to hurt very much if they are talking about me
and I have to leave.
But if it isn't, I am nervous but I am curious to see what they say, how far off they are or in rare moments, how close.
This also happens when I get embarrassed or someone is talking about me to my parents (teachers).

When the topic of autism comes up, it is strange and interesting to see what people say since they have no idea they are speaking in the presence of someone who knows it personally.
Typically, people know very little about it, and often have very narrow views on it, gleaned from movies and outdated beliefs, etc. I think they are usually aware they don't know much on the topic.
As a BCBA-in-training, I work alongside professionals who do know more about autism than the average folk, but they have no idea I--their comrade--am on the spectrum. It's weird. I just act normal, though, and offer my expertise when appropriate, never giving the impression of anything more than a professional who knows a thing or two about it.
No-one but my closest family members and friends know, and they are the ones I wish would actually talk about it around me.
