xiu xiu dr. troll

la la holds inside of her
the horrible dream of being somebody
thinking about her dream makes her feel
like it?s stupid
a dream whose coming true
is a must a must
it would be so much easier
if she was a real girl
the preschool students ask her
what she is
she thinks i don?t know
she says what do you think
listen to on fire and pretend someone could love you
listen to lady day and dream they knew the half of it
listen to birthday and pretend someone could love you
listen to nick drake and dream they knew the half of it

Yes, love Rhapsody in Blue and everything George Gershwin wrote in his tragically short life are so evocative. He set a course for American music that influenced it for at least a 100 years.

The song I would choose however for this topic is Desperado.

Leonard Cohen - Waiting for the Miracle

Baby, I've been waiting,
I've been waiting night and day.
I didn't see the time,
I waited half my life away.
There were lots of invitations
and I know you sent me some,
but I was waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.

I know you really loved me.
but, you see, my hands were tied.
I know it must have hurt you,
it must have hurt your pride
to have to stand beneath my window
with your bugle and your drum,
and me I'm up there waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.

Ah I don't believe you'd like it,
You wouldn't like it here.
There ain't no entertainment
and the judgements are severe.
The Maestro says it's Mozart
but it sounds like bubble gum
when you're waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.

Waiting for the miracle
There's nothing left to do.
I haven't been this happy
since the end of World War II.

Nothing left to do
when you know that you've been taken.
Nothing left to do
when you're begging for a crumb
Nothing left to do
when you've got to go on waiting
waiting for the miracle to come.

I dreamed about you, baby.
It was just the other night.
Most of you was naked
Ah but some of you was light.
The sands of time were falling
from your fingers and your thumb,
and you were waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come

Ah baby, let's get married,
we've been alone too long.
Let's be alone together.
Let's see if we're that strong.
Yeah let's do something crazy,
something absolutely wrong
while we're waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.

Nothing left to do ...

When you've fallen on the highway
and you're lying in the rain,
and they ask you how you're doing
of course you'll say you can't complain --
If you're squeezed for information,
that's when you've got to play it dumb:
You just say you're out there waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.

Rhapsody in Blue is a classic, indeed!

When I was 17, "At Seventeen," by Janis Ian, would have been a fitting song.

Dianthus, I would also include Cohen's Bird on a Wire and Famous Blue Raincoat. There is a poignancy he imbues to both those songs which evoke far more than the lyrics alone, the first with a theme of reflection, not fitting in and regret, the second isolation and reflection on lost connections and lingering betrayal not unmixed with forgiveness.

There was a thread like this before and if I remember right this song was the first posted, which I found very apt.

The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?

I am the son and the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

I am the son and the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

There's a club, if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home, and you cry, and you want to die

When you say it's gonna happen now
Well, when exactly do you mean?
See, I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

Ah, Desperado. My mother used to tell me that she would always think about me when she heard that song. That and 'Sittin on the Dock of the Bay' by Otis Redding.

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Eve White, Eve Black

Eve White, Eve Black
It hurts
there's a pain in my head
I wish it would stop
but it never stops
I can feel it coming--I'm getting weaker
please help me--I'm getting weaker
I'm getting weaker
please help me
I wish I could help myself...

Let me out of here--I belong out there
son of a b***h, son of a b***h
Let me out of here--I belong out there
Never say die--I must never die
Let me out of here--I belong out there
You son of a bitch--I'll pull your hair
Let me out of here--I belong out there
You son of a bitch--I'll pull your hair
Never say die--Never say die, I must, I must never die
Let me out of here--I belong out there
son of a b***h

The song Schizophrenia by Blue October. Justin Furstenfeld the lead singer of Blue October does an acoustic version the song it is hauntingly beautiful. I don't have schizophrenia and I don't know anyone that has it.

A silver plated numbing gum
And Jesus resting on my thumb
A hard to reach malaria
I've got the mood that seems to scare ya.
I'm paranoid, self destroyed.
Believe me lord I'm sorry
I've got the mood that seems to bury ya
I've got the nightmare called...
Schizophrenia

[Chorus]
I cry. I cry and I don't know why.
The fever becomes my home.
I cry. I cry and I don't know why.
The fever becomes my home.
Becomes my home.

I love it when you're holding me.
You have a gentle way of calming.
I haven't felt that way since 1993,
When my mother held me.
I bet you're waiting for a long sob story
OF how I was mistreated again.
No, I wasn't built that way.
I was strong but desperately brave,
And I didn't mean to scareya...
Schizophrenia.

[Repeat Chorus]
