Not a literal mask a mask like someone masking their behavior it's a figure of speech

Oh OK I get what you now. This made me think of the Simpsons episode where Lisa is on summer vacation and doesn't have any friends so she changes herself in to a cool looking kid in order to be popular.

Yes, this is the norm.
Now that I realise what I am, this is the scariest part of interracting with NT's now.
I know they they are so deceptive, even denying to themselves the truth.

It becomes so ingrained to conform, they don't even know who they truely are - end up having mid life crisses.
