Do you know what? The more I look into this (I didn't for years, I was ok with "that explains me, half my bio family and all the best weirdos I ever knew...WAY KOOL!!") I realise that even the BEST of *them* haven't got the FIRST CLUE what goes on inside us...
...and as for "why"...a parent who wanted out of the "refrigerator mother" theory couldn't make a worse mess of it...

Just to make it worse, take it back to the root and "Oncle Hans" himself may have had his objectivity addled by the need to keep the boys he worked with as far from Aktion T4 as possible...
I have a little theory I get more sure of by the day...a "low function" Aspie is simply an highly disturbed adult who happens to have AS...except that cockeyed ways of addressing the manifestations of AS (whether diagnosed or not) did most of the "disturbing"...and cockeyed efforts to fix it since go on making them more, and more, disturbed...world without end...amen...
