These same types of people think it's impossible for people to play music by ear. The ones that can play music by ear in their opinion are all a bunch of liars too. Anyone here play musical instruments by ear?

Generally, I don't play instruments, however on a few occasions I have. One summer (15 yrs. ago) I spent visiting someone with piano so I taught myself (through trial & error) to play a couple songs ("Amazing Grace" & a couple patriotic songs that had been drilled into my brain from having to sing them in childhood). I can't read (or write/notate) music, but I can "sound things out"-know if melody sounds "right". So I learned these songs by hitting one piano key at a time until I made no mistakes the whole way through song.

Anyway...
My answer to thread topic is neither here nor there, because it's all about the specific instances. I haven't much "history" with this dx-had been dx'd with various other labels up 'til a few years ago. Those with credentials (that I've encountered along the way) have been clueless deluded twits AND also caring, broad-minded, open-to-my-ideas people, too.

I don't come down on one side or the other, it depends-my opinion is not universally applied to all "professional whatevers" (be it for "mental", "medical", or any other area of expertise). Some are good, some are not. Paper doesn't inherently make you better or smarter, but often people (the paper-holder or those seeking that person's judgement) forget this.
