Why bother if Autism Speaks don't speak for us truthfully?

That's true, because as far as I know if you're on the spectrum they don't give a damn what you have to say. I usually pretend I'm talking about my brother or something.

Mariska Hargitay used to be my favorite actress until she started doing commercials for them. Now...

Oh Detective Benson. How could you?

We should start a group that totally rips on "autism speaks". We can call it "autism squeeks" or "autism queefs". The people who work for "autism speaks" take themselves way to seriously and need to be taken down a few pegs. The more autistics and aspies who openly desecrate "autism speaks", the quicker they will be shut down.

Official theme song from the PBS show... sung in a fast-paced swing beat...

Martha was an average dog. She went —
Bark. And— Woof. And— Arrr.
But when she ate some alphabet soup, then what happened was bizarre.
On the way to Martha's stomach, the letters lost their way. They travelled to her brain and now—
She's got a lot to say. Now she speaks.
(How now brown cow?)
Martha Speaks. Yeah, she speaks and speaks and speaks and speaks and speaks...
(What's a caboose? When are we eating again?)
Martha speaks...
(Hey Joe, what d'ya know!)
(My name's not Joe.)
She's not always right but still that Martha speaks.
(Hi there!)
She's got a voice; she's ready to shout. Martha will tell you what it's all about. Sometimes wrong, but seldom in doubt. Martha will tell you what it's all about. That dog's unique...
(Testing, one, two!)
Hear her speak! Martha Speaks and speaks and speaks and speaks and...
(Communicates, enumerates, elucidates, exaggerates, indicates, and explicates, bloviates, and overstates and (pant, pant, pant) hyperventilates!)
Martha...to reiterate, Martha speaks!

My son and I love Martha Speaks. It's really excellent for vocabulary development. :)

Autism cure charity. Not a single autistic person on their board of directors, of course. Infamous for the "Autism Every Day" video, in which autism is made to seem like the end of everybody's life through staged scenes and an unrealistically negative spin, and one autism mom actually says she thinks about killing her autistic child and herself, but is prevented from doing so because she has another, non-autistic, child.

Holy cow, I sure hope my mum doesn't do that! She hates me as it is! 8O

autism speaks isnt automatically all bad,a lot of the members are just innocent parents who want their children to have a better life,it's the organisations high up people that cause most of the problems.

While the "rank and file" may be innocent, the "high command" are the ones with the money, the influence, the lawyers, and the big mouths. And the way this group has manipulated much of the public's opinion on those like us is, in a word, sickening. They try to make us out to be a burden. And the leadership does not take kindly to those say otherwise.

Their history of dealing with autistics in general, and self-advocates in particular, does not sit well with most here. I didn't know a whole lot about them until recently - and what I have seen is quite unsettling. If parents want their Spectrum children to live a better life, they would be better served by those who know the autistic life best - and that is us and those NT's who stand with us.

If there were some way to get some form of advertising for this site into a national publication dealing with autism, and include that (unlike Autism Speaks), most of its members - including its founder and leadership - are somewhere on the Spectrum and are willing to offer some practical advice for Spectrum-folk of all ages. Or even just provide a place to be themselves for a bit without fear or persecution.

Hmm.....I don't see the words Autism Speaks in there, so they couldn't get us for using their name. The closest thing to that is "Autism" and "Speak", and those are separated by "Really Does".

We could also point out the fact that they have no autistic leadership, whereas we do.

And of course there is that infamous 'Autism Every Day' video.

I'm sure there are some people here who have documented their history of intimidating self-advocates and not allowing autistics to speak for themselves at their conferences.....

Is there an autistic attorney in the house?
