There are ,IMO ,major problems in just looking at functioning in the context of ASD symptoms . Those symptoms should only be part of, and not the whole of, how well a person is reckoned to function.

I've had , until the last few years,my difficulties dismissed or trivialised because verbally I'm very intelligent. The trouble being that doesn't transfer to a more non-verbal/practical environment. The longer difficulties are dismissed or trivialised the less any potential you may have is going to be fulfilled. Throughout all that there's the negativity of people when you don't match up to their erroneous expectations.

This is not a Site exclusively for people with autism or with Aspergers.

It is a Site for people who have a positive, vested interest in autism—whether NT or not NT.

Alex would, most likely, say the same thing.

On the other hand, in addition to invalidating those with lower functioning skill, some of you also want to silence NTs. So, we can't have NTs ... and we will cancel lower functioning members like enigmas. We'll suggest they don't even exist, or that they are narcissists parading as trauma victims, just to get special treatment. I don't think that was Alex's vision and dream for Wrong Planet but that's what I'm reading right here, in this very thread, on the topic of functioning levels, inclusion, and equality.

Cancel us all since it seems we aren't wanted. That leaves WP an echo chamber for higher functioning persons with Aspergers, and without NT participants, when it is supposed to be a support site for various forms and levels of neurodiversity.

This is why I'm no longer happy here, and I've made my final decision to leave.

You seem to have the wrong end of the stick. I am an advocate for people who don't get to participate in this forum whom would actually be classified as lower functioning and yes I know everything you posted (probably better than you realise). I picked intellectual ability as that is a major impediment in many people on the spectrum not participating here and I would like to change that.

I am not cancelling anyone, please take responsibility for your own decisions and don't use my posts as a reason for leaving WP as you are an adult and are capable of ignoring me if you find my presence offensive.

Tell that to the anti-NT brigade

I am sorry but me and Teach are not part of that group you are referring to. I have engaged you before FM and am happy to continue to do so. At whatever pace you want.

Things that occur here: under recognition of those who are low functioning ; hostility towards those who are NT; those who were lucky enough to be born at the right time to get an early diagnosis being dismissive of those who weren't so lucky.

@Cyberdad

Enough with the me and Teach is there something you are not getting? Please stop bringing NT wars into my thread where they don't exist.

firemonkey did not accuse NT's of anything. Nobody is. Everyone is behaving well except you.
Are you trying to get me banned? :) I believe you are.

That was in no way meant as a criticism of Teach and you. I don't have any issues with either of you. If I have upset you both I apologise.

Do you have any ideas of what kind of responses here would help you?
Do you feel that your voice is respected here now?
I have heard you talk about your step-daughter frequently and how she helps you. I am so glad that she does. Is she still coming frequently during the pandemic?

The more I think about it the more complex and multi faceted the issue of functioning becomes, and how to best help the individual at whatever level of functioning there at .
Even within levels what make work for one person might not for another.

Yes, this is very true.
"Functioning levels" are some classification useful mainly for bureaucratic purposes of defining how much public resources can be spent on a given individual. Spiky ability profiles seem a norm among ASD people, so two people on the same "functioning level" are more than likely to have completely different sets of issuees and abilities.

Anything but harsh responses or the ultra glib 'Try harder' when people have no idea of how hard you may have tried. Constructive criticism is fine. As is suggesting approaches to take.

As for respect; I wouldn't like to say for certain . There are certain places I'm accepted more at than others. Those include schizophrenia.com ; a small UK based mental health forum; Facebook high IQ societies . I would say to a slighter lesser degree here too..

My stepdaughter is still coming round as much as she can ,work permitting. Here she is. I'm very proud of her.

Lol....I wish I could get scores like Firemonkey gets.

I would be flattened like a pancake in those “High IQ” forums :)

Cyberdad....I’m always saying what I say to the “anti-NT brigade.” How come you don’t talk about your daughter more? I’m guessing WP maybe is sort of an “escape” for you, which is cool.
