I think Alex should explain himself when it comes to talking to Autism Speaks people. The are very, very good at making themselves look good; and it looks like they think they can whitewash themselves in the minds of autistic self-advocates. I won't believe it until they stop looking for prenatal tests, stop giving themselves ludicrous salaries, and start spending money on quality of life and education for actual autistic people.

I'm with Callista on this.

I feel it would be best if the channel were run by someone who frequented the channel, knew its users and had some experience being an actual Operator. Now, I'm not saying that this couldn't be Alex but he'd need to actually come to the channel, talk to his users, learn how to operate the channel and work with the other OPs. If this is not possible, I think it would be beneficial if another user was granted Founder status, so the channel could be run smoothly.

Anyone can found a channel but it does take a rational mind, experience and a certain impartiality, to be an Operator. Alex either needs to step up and prove he can be a leader worth following or step down and give one of the more experienced OPs control, while possibly setting up closer ties with the channel and the forum, so we can feel more like one community, although that last one isn't necessarily needed.

This is a huge, successful site. There are jerks and creeps and whores  that run around occasionally but the overwhelming majority of threads are interesting at worse. Tons of threads are helpful, informative and some good fun. Alex is free to do whatever he wants to do and if anyone disagrees with him why not just leave. What makes anyone think they have the right to demand anything of someone that provides this type of gathering place...AT NO COST. And it is also a pretty good technical achievement too. This site is very smooth considering the numbers online. Most of the technical part of this is easy and it works. (if you find it doesn't work for you..I guarantee you it is your own lousy internet connection....or lack of skills...sorry, not being harsh, just honest).

Why is it when someone does something as awesome as this site do people try to find the thing that negates all the good work done. This is no easy undertaking, it is an amazing thing. Everyday people run off and think they can do this better but then I go and visit the other sites and a little handful runs the site and a little handful post new stuff. Alex is not the president of the free world, he doesn't have to answer to anyone.

I do not have much experience with chat channels, but I can tell you there is little chance of the one you are talking about ever being much different than at present.

You might believe that channel needs that, but Alex has no such need. I do not know him personally, but I can say I have yet to ever anywhere see anything whatsoever even remotely suggesting Alex has even the slightest thought of being any kind of leader followed by anyone. He essentially allows other people into his "home" for some discussion here or to chat ... and that is about the end of that.

I'm surprised Alex has let this thread go on as long as it has, since he seems to delete all criticism of his youtube videos on his youtube page.

Or maybe Alex is so concerned with creating crappy Autism Talk TV videos he's ignored his forum.

I'm trying to understand this thing that Autism Speaks does, this 'genocide'. I am unfamiliar with their mission?

If there are different camps arguing over the status, direction and treatments of people with aspergers, its probably likely that the right thing may not ever happen.... Those affected in a minority, are usually bound by the ruling majority, big pharma have a big banana?

Alex enjoys eating bananas? I like lady fingers and plantains too

To be honest I don't think Autism Speaks gives much of a frak about Asperger's Syndrome, most of their website seems focused on classic autism.

The channel runs fairly smoothly, a few users bring back negative feedback to Alex and he intervenes, which causes 90% of the active OPs to leave and the channel destabilizes. Shortly after, Alex eventually moves on again, leaving the channel a mess. He needs to stick it out and work with us or just not do anything.

The channel is home to many and I believe that the people on the channel/site are far more important than the owner. Alex needs to realize this, if he hasn't.

Alex has a life. Sorry you don't see that.

Maybe you should get one?

There is yet another option: Do just as I am doing here and try to address the "negative feedback" from those "few users" before things might again get all messed up. I might be delusional in thinking I am making any difference here, but I will nevertheless keep pressing people to look for things to say other than what they think Alex might owe anyone or need to do and to find resolutions amongst themselves. Alex is not our mother.

That post is nothing but a childish cheap shot revealing nothing other than your disrespect.

Those worried about speaking out really don't need to. As long as everyone follows the terms of service, there is no risk of being banned or even edited. The moderators believe in believe in free speech to the maximum extent allowed by the TOS. Seriously. I strongly believe that this is your community, even if it is Alex's site, and you should say what you want just as long as you stay clear of outright slandering him (as I would want you to stay clear of slandering anyone). I, personally, think it is important to know how the membership feels about the things going on, and for the owner to get a sense of what the membership is perceiving (not that he has to listen). And ... that is probably the limits of what I should say on any of this.

DW a mom, you've really been tempering threads like this one and some of the others related to the Autism Speaks underwriting support very well. You've made some thoughtful points and, just in case no one else has told you this recently, I think we're lucky to have you as a mod.
