Yeah, I got that many times" Why don't you *** *** *** like everybody else?!" Because I'm not freaking "like everybody else!". It's funny though, because Americans are considered to be the most individualistic and selfish people yet, they're extremely prone to the herd mentality.

Just go to any tourist place. Everybody will crowd around the sign that says "Scenic View", even though there are equally scenic or better views up and down the road. But they'd wait in that one spot, like everybody else, for their turn to shot a photo.

I can see the logic behind it.
One would assume that the ordinary people line would have more people in it than the VIP line, since being a VIP becomes meaningless if the majority of people are VIPs.
Thus, if you're after the ordinary people line and you haven't seen the signs indicating which line is which, it makes sense to go to the line with more people.
Logic, not herd behaviour.

I think it's a combination of both logic and herd behaviour.

Logic: most people will not be VIPs, therefore the longer line is most likely the non-VIP line

Herd Behaviour: assuming that the other people in the line have checked that it is the non-VIP line, therefore you don't have to check, the "herd" has already done that work

The only thing I'm completely sure about in this thread is that no one's to be considered more 'socially successful' than me because of what line they get in...that, and that, yes, sheep are cute (usually).
