Flat news anchor is an accent.

I consciously avoided some of the affectations in my family and local to me. I recall that I hated how my paternal grandmother would say "mondee, tuesdee," instead of monday, tuesday. Or both she and my father would say "warsh" instead of "wash." Or talk about going to Warshington. To me, these were all wrong, wrong, wrong. But I could cope with the distinction between through and rough.

I used to practice faking accents, and I found faking particular accents made call center work more bearable (Americans seem to respond better to a woman speaking with a Southern-esque accent. Something I found intriguing but never really tried to work out why). I can't say they were perfect, and it's either harder for me to do now or I have a better sense of how off my attempts sound.

Um. This post! I was pretty much about to type the exact same thing! local accents really pissed me off when I was younger. I can't STAND the things like "Mondee" or "Warshington".
People always ask me where I am from if they don't know me. I kind of have a non-rhotic type of accent compared to other people in my area plus I emphasize some word's syllables incorrectly.

Also, I say "roof" correctly. As in book, hook, look, etc...

I once surprised a coworker when I told him that I grew up just a few miles from where I work. I'm on the West Coast of the US; he thought I was from the East Coast.

I have a neutral accent, but I'm sure there are regional nuances, even if it's not as strong of an accent as other people.

There's an entire site devoted to dialects and picking out regional differences for every single syllable. You might find that site interesting, as it has samples of people from almost every state and includes a list of where each of the people have previously lived.
