Today, my Doctor confirmed what I've known for a long time. It's just a formality to have the official diagnosis.

How many hoops did you have to jump through?

Were you not working on this last summer? Or am I confusing you with someone else?

It might have been me. I complained a little while back about the financial barriers I thought I'd have to break.

I actually was unaware that a PhD could make the diagnosis. Apparently, they can. My husband and I both went to his psychologist from when he was a teenager. He remembered him, and after talking with us both together and separately, Asperger's made sense to him for both of us. I was concerned that I'd have to put up $1000 for the specialist, but it turned out I didn't need to.

Thanks! I am who I am, and I've got to make the best of it. I'm going to go out there and make something of myself. I may even start a local chapter of a support group. I was just contacted today by the president of ASCEND about leading a group in my area! :)

Do you mean a GP? They can't diagnose you, they can only refer you to a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist for further assessment. They, of course can suspect that you have it, and that's why they send you on further.

My doctor is a psychologist, but he's a PhD, not an MD (psychiatrist).

Thanks. It's kinda hard to treat this like news since I already knew, but I guess there's something good and validating about having a professional opinion match your own self-diagnostics. I'm still the same, proud me, now with 299.80% more credibility. *drum roll*

Is it inappropriate to ask who you saw? I used to live in Lansdale, and spent my entire childhood and adolescence in Montgomery County.

Yeah, they can do it.

I'm guessing you've had a rough time/life leading up to such (i.e., life has been hard)? It seems to be the case with most adults.

I just got my diagnosis this spring, so I know what you mean about it being validating. It made it more real for me, because even though I KNEW, I still can slip into doubt/denial sometimes. I'm glad you got your diagnosis.
