Aspies who travel a lot
This is such a mystery to me. There isn't enough room here to write out the list of why I can't stand to travel. I would never think I'd see so many responses here that people 'love' to travel. Even thinking about traveling makes me anxious. I would be fine never having to travel anywhere, ever again.
[I don't even want to see other places. I am very interested in all places; culture, language, religion, diet, climate...everything. I don't need to see it, I don't live there.]
I'm surprised this isn't a general aspie thing.
Feel like a freak everywhere.
I guess you need to be into sight seeing. I'm not. People tell me I need to go to New York some day. I tell them there's nothing I want to do in New York. They start naming all the sights to see and I say I can look them all up on the Internet for free. Seems weird to spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars, plus hours cramped up in an airplane seat to see something.
I love travel and exploring different countries - there's so many places I want to see and explore. However, I find travelling in planes, trains and buses difficult because I've had panic attacks using them in the past and am scared about having another panic attack. But, once I've arrived at my destination (which I have researched thoroughly before I went), I can relax and enjoy myself. I don't like just going to all the famous sights of a place, I only go to the ones I'm interested in, and then wander around to get the atmosphere of the place. I usually travel on my own.
I have a rule which says I must learn some of the language of the place I am going to.
I've been to Japan (and lived there for a year), China, Hong Kong, Macau, Iceland, France, Belgium, Austria, Portugal, and Boston and Cape Cod in the US.
I'd just like to update this a little. If you do travel, DO NOT FLY WITH UNITED AIRHEADS-oh excuse me Airlines! These people tried to leave me stranded in Denver two years ago then prior to this, another incident happened where I had to be rerouted to San Francisco because I was still in security and I didn't hear my name being called (You think my dad gets pissed at me for stupid sh*t. He lost his mind when "talking" to the gate agent. I was so embarrassed. ) So while my luggage is on its way to Denver, I'm still sitting at the gate in Eugene waiting for this OTHER plane to take me to San Francisco. Yeah! Thanks a lot United! Enjoy that Christmas bonus while you can because your service SUCKS!
And while we're on the subject, United recently made news TWICE for having the WORST flight crew imaginable. Here's what a mean: First, there's the case of the Beegle family from Portland, Oregon. Their 15-year old daughter has non verbal autism and cannot verbalize her needs and wants.
This family gets booted off the plane during an "emergency landing" in Salt Lake City because the teenager was hungry and about to have a meltdown because the flight attendant would not serve her a hot meal (according to mom, she's a picky eater and will not eat anything unless it is hot.)
Donna Beegle, (the mother of Juliette, the teen with autism) is now suing the airline for discrimination.
Another case of discrimination with United happened to a Muslim woman when she asked for an unopened can of diet coke. the flight attendant on this flight told her that they usually do not serve cans unopened then proceeded to say "no soda for you." after witnessing a male passenger receive an unopened can of beer, she asked why the male passenger sitting next to her was allowed to have an unopened beverage and she was not and the flight attendant told her it could be used as a weapon. In a CNN interview with this passenger, she proceeds to explain that she thought the reasons for that were odd so she asked the flight attendant why and the flight attendant basically rephrased her previous statement saying the other passengers on board would not use an unopened can of soda as a weapon but this woman might (because of her race and the religion she practiced) other passengers then proceeded to tell the discriminated passenger to "Shut your mouth and sit down"
Again, DO NOT FLY WITH THIS AIRLINE!! They are incompetent, rude and probably out to steal your money.

I move around too much. I can't seem to stay in one place. I wonder if it's a way that I cope with the feeling of being alien no matter where I go, and with the fact that I can't seem to establish interpersonal connections. Being a nomad excuses those things. Makes me look less "abnormal". And I feel more like myself when I'm not worried about coming across as visibly "abnormal", so I can't get enough of it.
Oddly, I do well in airports.
this!! Everything about being in an airplane is just awesome.
I love traveling, seeing new places is endlessly fascinating. Everything is so different..
I don't travel nearly as much as I'd like, though. Hopefully I can fix that when I get older.

life is a game
I really like traveling and discovering new-to-me things. I did a lot of global travel when I was younger, mostly tropical but also a few European countries. I even had a small fixed wing aircraft (VFR) license for a few years. Could not afford to maintain it so I let it lapse.
I am very glad I had the opportunity to travel when I did, before "terrorism" and "security". Now I only travel in Canada. Mostly museums, points of interest, nature, camping. It's so huge and so sparsely populated and full of natural wonders. I could live two entire lifetimes and never experience it all.
I prefer to drive everywhere and I bring an apartment with me (4 season holiday trailer) and all the gear I may need and my pets.
I have been uploading video's of my adventures recently to YouTube, partly as therapy(talking on camera), partly as a side interest(content creation/video editing).
