In my latest studies I have been reflecting on the Right / Left brain balance of people in the spectrum. I have met few people in the spectrum who are poets and whose natural style of expression is figurative and often suffused with metaphor and imagery. In fact the person I have met with AS who this ability, is Donna Willams.

Would you say that you have these qualities?

Chris

i think so. i love creative projects. but i also like things to be logical---i'm always cheered when there's a structure to something, and i can see how that structure works together.

you met Donna Williams? i'm having an "ed grimley" moment. (very excited for you.) she's an amazing woman.

Yes, I ate a poet and a pragmatist for lunch. They were delicious.

Yes. I think you kind of need both for either to work well. The practical side has to be well-developed to properly articulate metaphors and ideas, and that side of the brain needs to function well to give substance to pragmatic language.

I think almost completely in metaphor. I'm so meta, I'm an ouroboros.

I was once told that in conversation I jumped from left-brain to right-brain and back more frequently and suddenly than most people ever do, whatever that means.

I'd say that the poet in me is the main driving force, the most vital part of my mind. I'm much better practiced in science and other logical pursuits, and my noticeable artistic output is low, but I see the artistic side as the real me. The scientific side is just there to support the artist. True poverty is when all your time is taken up just turning the handles, with no time left to notice the beauty and ugliness in the world or to share those impressions with others.

On the other hand, there's a surprising amount of creativity in science and the logical solution of problems. The good ideas that come into the mind from who-knows-where have much the same feel to them whether it's an idea for a good piece of music or for a new set of shelves.

Not sure what a pragmatist is and I'm far too lazy to Google it, but I'm a poet yes. I wrote a poem about Asperger's and posted it on this very forum, too.
