the volume of music?

Every NT I've lived with has a preference to play their music at frighteningly loud levels . . . no matter what genre they are listening to. Right now, two of my roommates are blasting classical so loud that it's disturbing me across the house and up a floor. I love classical, yet I'm in anguish over this intrusion. I'm also bothered by the dissonant tonalities of Brian's preferred composers and selections.

This is not the point. In a car, or at home, or using a portable device, why are they blasting music so loudly? I'm hard of hearing yet I never listen at anything near those volumes.

I've played music loudly in my car a few times... it's very fun, actually. I heard of a judge who sentenced a kid who was 'disturbing the peace' or something with a boom-box to either community service or a few hours of classical music. He had an alternative that perfectly fit the crime. "If you're going to force your music on other people, then I will force my music on you."

I have a hard time understanding that, as well. I used to hate it, when I used to have nice songs playing in my head, and than some young man would drive by with rap music, blasting from the back of his car. I just listen to my portable CD player, now and it doesn't bother me, nearly as much as it used to.

I only blast music when there are a lot of sounds around me i.e people chatting on a train. It does hurt my ears though. Sometimes at concerts the sound is too loud and I get a bit overloaded.

What's worse are the cars that have the bass so loud the windows shake as if they're about to shatter. Especially when they're behind you at a stoplight.

Only time I listen to music really loud is when im working out or when I was drinking and smoking

I don't understand it either because in my opinion, music doesn't always sound better when it's louder...sometimes it just ends up sounding like a bunch of noise instead of an actual song. I also think it's weird how some people can listen to music so loud on their MP3 players/Ipods because the sound is right next to your ears...ouch!

I hate loud music. When I'm out and about, I usually listen to my iPod, but I can still hear the loud music blaring from their phones and whatnot. Usually resulting in me turning said iPod up to unbearable volumes

I like to play my music loud, although it's probably worth mentioning that I also have a hearing loss. My mother thinks my music is too loud but other people my age seem to play theirs at about the same volume. However, my brother likes blasting his music and if I get into his car I have to cover my ears until he turns the music down because it's way too loud for me.

I absolutely love loud music. Even if on headphones. I just love being in my own world shutting out all the other sounds

Don't know what my housemates would say but I'm sure they don't appreciate metal blasting throughout our house

My fascination with this is the power of the low frequency sound of the bass. Sometimes I will find a preference on an equaliser. I don't know how to mess about with the settings completely, but I find a preset of either dance, or club, or something. On my speakers, if they have bass and treble, I turn the bass to around 75% of max, and treble is up to 25% of max as distortions occur. Sometimes I will fiddle around a little on these two with near maximum music to get rid of any distortion so I can feel comfortable at any level I put it up to is going to sound OK.

your roommates are being inconsiderate, in terms of volume. you need to come to some sort of arrangement with them to where they can listen to their stuff when you are least likely to be around, or limit listening time, or wear headphones. this said, audio professionals will tell you there is only one "correct" volume level at which to properly listen to music, and that level is generally within 10db of its actual recording volume [how loud it was in the recording venue]- listening above that level or below alters the frequency balance unpleasantly, with low levels losing bass/treble and sounding comparatively muffled.

btw, are you sure you're hard of hearing? you may have an [aural] perceptual difficulty instead. you mentioned dissonant tonalities which makes me think you have unusual acuteness in your aural sensitivity. when i was young, i absolutely couldn't stand the whistling whining sound of the vacuum cleaner- too much treble energy. animals like cats also hate vacuum cleaners for the same reason- extra sensitivity to trebles.

If there's a song that I like, I'll turn the radio up. Other than that, I like the radio at a reasonable volume.

My son the rock star to be is a loud music buff. Not me. I like to be able to hear it, yes, but forget boombox.

There is the privacy issue - in LA I listened to some of my music through headphones because I could not bear the thought someone else might know what I was listening to.

And the intrusion - right now I am sitting in a hospital cafeteria trying to listen to my wake-up tapes. And I can, with headphones, hear them. But the stupid loudspeaker is blasting "music" that I abominate at a level where even good sound deadening headphones only filter it.

I want the best sonic experience possible for my music. I don't necessarily blare my music, but I equalize it for the best possible listening experience for me. If I'm listening to metal, or rock, then yes, I play it loud. I wish I had a 5.1 sound system in here.

Loud music, when it is not yours, is definitely annoying. I don't even like playing music loudly when it is mine come to think- sometimes with head phones. I used to have a hard time handling concerts but I think I've gotten used to it. Same with crowed places like cafeterias. I never ate in the cafeteria in high school. Ugh just thinking about the noise generated by lots of people and their mindless chatter makes me cringe.
