I'm a speaker and I give presentations on autism/asperger's. I myself have Asperger's and last Friday a professional asked me, "What's the one thing you wish other people understood about autism spectrum disorders?" Normally, when in my speaker alias, I am quick to answer a question. I've developed almost a game show host persona in that I'm quick, personable, and sometimes witty (or at least I try to be:)

Anyways, I was unable to answer the question because I was filled with so many thoughts I couldn't pick one, so I would be curious if anyone else could answer this question. Can it be narrowed down to one thing? I do know each person's one thing is going to be radcially different so is it even worth trying to answer this question? Thoughts...?

For me ... I wish people would understand what it is that I want but I'm unable to express.

I'm trying harder than they will ever realise.

I will totally agree with this. I wrote a chapter about that which I entitled, "If I were dying of thrist would I ask for a glass of water" and I said that asking for something and the process of expressing it is worse than dying of thirst due to the anxiety that builds up in the whole trying to express something.

Your quote is amazing! I know that feeling and I don't know if someone who isn't on the spectrum could even begin to grasp the depth of that.

That a hair brush is a better tool for social grooming than language.

That can be said for any condition or disorder. Everyone who isn't normal, would sure like other people to know that.

That they didn't point out that I'm always quiet. I know I'm quiet, and it bothers me when they point it out and laugh about it. I wouldn't be as bothered by it if they let me be.

That it is possible to have Asperger's and like to be social and enjoy social situations, as I do.

That I'm not being sarcastic or pedantic - I really don't understand what they've just said!
(Often this is due to my ear/brain interface - sometimes words get garbled and I hear something completely different, leaving us both baffled...)

There is not much I want other people to know and very little of it has anything to do with autism.
Of course I want people to think like I do and see every person as different in every possible way.
Not completely different, perhaps just slightly different, but I believe no two persons are perfectly alike in any way.
And that mathematics is useful and glorious, just like numbers.

I wish people knew that my differences are not something that I can control. People think that because I've been diagnosed with AS that I can magically fix it, but I can't. It doesn't work that way. Even if I can appear more typical for a little while it is very tiring, and I'm not using being tired as an excuse to get away from you.
