I was a picky eater also - and couldn't stand mushy foods. Applesauce, mashed potatoes, soggy veggies - YUCK. It also didn't help that my mother did not know how to cook, so mashed potatoes were from a box (the worst) and broccoli was frozen and so was always soggy. Also hated ketchup as a kid but LOVED mustard. I would put mustard on anything.

Only recently did I learn that I did, in fact, like mashed potatoes if they were made from real potatoes and left a bit chunkier. I still don't like mushy veggies, though. But today I will eat virtually any veggie, except peas, brussels sprouts, overcooked squash, lime beans and other "weird" veggies. Don't like corn much, but will eat it if it's on the cob (I would not eat it at ALL as a kid).

no hot drinks or even warm drinks, all beverages must be ice-cold. no raw veggies, they must be cooked 'till tender. no chewy things due to TMJ. no crunchy things due to weak teeth. no olives or cucumbers. i guess that qualifies as picky.

I'm not super-picky, my problem is eating the same thing over and over again.

When my daughter (she is HFA) was very young, she only liked Chinese food. That and no red meat, only fish, rice and stir fried vegetables.
When I was very young, (I've AS) I would only eat orange or red jello for breakfast.

While my daughter is not so much into vegetables now, I try to eat more sensibly. :P

I was incredibly picky as a child I couldn't bear sauces but I did like mashed potatoes. In my 20s I tried Indian food I had to be drug in by my friend and ordered for. I actually like it and am more adventurous now, but i still prefer a more monotonous diet.

When I was a kid I was very fussy. Everything was either too hot or too cold, too mushy or too crunchy, the wrong colour, the wrong size or just (in my mind) smelled like something that my cat had sicked up. At one stage I did become very skinny. You could see my ribs so my mum literally force fed me & I spent most nights retching for hours until I had finished a small amount of dinner. Strangely enough, I ate my school lunches with no problems and they were things like crisps, peanut butter sandwiches, fruit, museli bars etc...the usual things.

Now I am not very fussy. I eat almost anything (that's vegan) except for one thing I have never liked...green olives.

Ditto. I grew up without the benefit of choice in what I ate, I had to eat what was in front of me, couldn't leave the table until it was gone. However, most people describe me as a picky eater, which is true, when given a choice I am very exact in what I want.

That being said, I will eat just about anything to avoid offending the person offering.

I was curious to know, is it a common thing among those on the spectrum?

I'm quite a picky eater, but these days I have more variety in my diet than what I used to. When I was younger I virtually lived on buttered bread, and at one point became very skinny. Has anybody else here had a similar experience with regards to fussy eating?

Discuss.

Butter and bread makes you skinny? Real butter and white bread? I'm amazed. Bread has always been what made me gain wait.

Anyway, I was a real picky eater as a kid. The usual hating vegetables, but I really hated onions, tomatoes, cooked pineapple, salt n vinegar chips and apple pie. These days I can eat all that and maybe make a disgusted face about the onion. I was really missing out with that apple pie. Oh and I hated pumpkin too.

Could not eat lima beans. And then was punished for being unable to eat them. How can one eat something that one could not chew without gagging?
All the punishments during childhood at the dinner table make me a nervous eater. I want to get eating over with as soon as possible. Thus I eat too fast and hardly chew.

Which is why I'm totally against making kids eat something they hate. I didn't do it to my kids, even though my parents thought I was spoiling them by not forcing them to eat certain things. Encourage, yes, force, no. :x

Just thinking about eating lima beans... Gack.

I'm almost the same, i cannot drink anything that's hot even if its soup. this annoys my dad a lot because i will make myself some hot chocolate or soup and then leave it sitting for like minutes to cool down until its a tolerable temperature for me. since he likes things scalding hot he finds this aspect of me veeeery weird and sometimes ends up eating/drinking it instead of me because he doesnt want it to go to waste

Depends on definitions. I was never "eats only these four things" - but there are a lot of things, starting with eggs, that I cannot eat and a bigger list I prefer not to eat. Mostly based on texture, though taste is also a factor.

I am still a very picky eater, and I have been an adult for several decades !

The texture of food is important to me. I prefer foods with a little bit of crunch to them. I have very few things I will eat, I won't hardly try new foods, and if I don't know what something is, will not touch it. Also won't eat leftovers, not even pizza leftover.

When I was a child, all children were made to drink milk (yes it was the 50's). My poor mother could not for the life of her get me to drink milk. She finally gave up trying, and figured I would survive.

Yes, it was real butter and white bread, but I think the reason I became skinny was because I ran around a lot and had a fast metabolism.

BTW, some of these replies sound a lot like me as a kid. Texture was a big issue for me too. Yoghurt drinks, custard and cream were the worst, to me they were not quite solid and not quite liquid. Even now I won't go near them, and I think that might be because as a child I was almost forced into eating them, like at a birthday party, and I found it quite traumatic. The main problem with me now though is the smell of certain foods - if something smells funny to me, I won't try it because I can almost "taste" the smell in my sinus, which isn't pleasant. These days I'm a vegetarian (considering going vegan), and will usually stick to things that are healthy and don't contain animal products.

Have always been a picky eater. Guilty
Never liked weird textures from cooked vegetables like zucchini or squash. Syrups have bugged me which stemmed to me being intolerant of high fructose corn syrup.
Hate mashed potatoes, beans, whip cream, and custard. Textures and tastes really make me picky.
Love mustard, broccoli, rice, and tangerines. I tend to starve or fast until a guardian brings something home that is not processed and taste like death.

I have always been a very picky eater. I lived on peanut butter and bread as a kid. When I did eat other foods they couldn't touch and if they did I wouldn't eat them. Even now Im still a picky eater but Im starting to get more of a variety. When Im alone I stick to the same foods but when Im with my girlfriend I get alot more variety. When Im at a restaraunt I always order the same thing in fear that if I order something new it wont taste as good. I have a think about white foods. I won't even touch mayo or miracle whip or ranch dressing. I love barbaque sauce and If I could I would put it on everything.
