If this is about the relative coverage that both incidents received (btw CockneyRebel, he's referring to the one that killed 12 miners, not just a random explosion), it's simple: people don't like to dwell on things that make them sad.

I've seen newspapers in which some celebrity breaking up with her boyfriend is given the first page while the deaths of 10 people are hidden in a tiny box on page 20.

All it takes is a sizeable constituency. News of the places that interest me barely make it into the paper - I am a minority. But I knew some people who had nes of the home team mailed to them on the other side of the planet.
