Example someone insists you get interested in X have you tried getting into say fashion (for the teens) or girly magazines (Seventeen,Cosmo etc.) or perhaps as I might have to do choose a different field that's NOT Psychology. I'm considering it since my parents are 100% put there foot down NO STUDYING Psychology but the other fields I can think of that might seem ever so slightly interesting (based off documentaries/stuff I've read/heard) are 4 year Bachelor then a higher degree level Law school (Lawyer) or Med school (Neurology). So either way like Psychology it's going to take ALOT of school you can't work 4 years Bachelor GO TO JOB! LOL! :-)

My parents all the time tried to get me to do Media Study (my original major) + Anthro (current major) so that I can be marketable. Guess what? I HATED FILM! It took 'em a while to realize that, even after repeatedly saying that I hate film. I went through a bunch of other majors, too, before coming back to anthro. So, you gotta do what you love. I mean, I know I'll be in school another 5 or 6 years, but hopefully I'll be on a stipend and hopefully I'll be doing something enjoyable. My special interest is what it is and there is no changing it. So, I'm basically doing what I want. There is plenty of market for psych majors, maybe not right at this moment, but if you get your PhD in the future, maybe there will be more of a market. You can also get a minor or pull a double major (impressive!) It also depends on who your research adviser is I think once you get into grad school. From what I've read. There are crappy doctors and lawyers, too. It just depends.

I mean, what's the worse they will do, pull your funding? (Maybe I am too rebellious, idk) If so, there are many options. If it's on your dime, it's your call anyway. Any way you go, good luck! :)

I've tried the UK 70-s Punk Movement, for two and a half years, to find out that it was the wrong interest for me, all along.

Nope! My parents and shrinks always told me I needed to "widen my horizons" but it just went in one ear and out the other. My parents gave up trying to get me to stop talking about meerkats all the time and they too became meerkat experts. My special intrests have always been animal or zoology related. I could care less about other things. I never really wanted friends as a child, I just wanted someone to listen to me lecture them about meerkats and other animals. It drove me nuts that no one wanted to listen to me. My parents said that in order for people to talk abotu what I was intrested in I had to be intrested in what they were into. I pretended to be into Goosebumps and it turned into an obsession but it never worked. I still contiuned to repel other kids and they thought I was still weird. I stoped trying to make friends as a teenager. If people want to be my friend, they must accept me as I am, special intrests and all. If people think I am weird or strange and want me to stop liking meerkats they can go jump in a lake. I'm not changing myself for anyone.

It is quite rare for me to take up a new interest. Most of my interests were well established by age 20. From about 11 to 20, several interests started usually as the result of following up after chance encounters - I basically stumbled into them.

These days, some old interest fade for a while - months or even years - only to be re-sparked, again by chance encounters. However, the idea of simply choosing to take interest in something new is foreign and actually somewhat unsettling.

I try to introduce myself to new interests, but the initial spark needs to be there for it to work - there's absolutely no point in me trying to be interested in a subject chosen for me by someone else unless it's reasonably closely related to an interest I already have.

So far this year I've tried getting interested in cooking (again, at my parents' insistence, and it hasn't worked out so far), graphic novels (going somewhat better) and Le Mans Series (that's going very well).

I am currently in the process of doing this with my current interest.

It isn't so much in changing the interest, but much rather channeling it into a more appropriate means. My special interest is the flood that hit our city two years ago and the ensuing politics, history and social implications that have ensued. I have been very active in a lot of different arenas related to this. The biggest thing I would like to change (and the interest had somewhat surrounded), is the obsession with a childhood friend that is now a local public official. I am learning that he is not the great, admirable person that everyone thought he was, plus he has been nasty to me over the last year and a half.

I am in the process of getting involved with a group of twenty and thirty-somethings in our community that is politically and socially active in the community. I am hoping I can still leave my imprint on the city, but at the same time divorce myself from my obsession.

The last time that I did this, it was a similar situation. In order to move on from a moment in my life that I wanted best to forget at that time, I got involved in volunteering for my political party. This has led to some great things in my life including the church that I now go to.

Changing interests can be difficult, especially if it has been something, or someone that has brought you some pleasure in the past. But the new interest can also lead to better and greater things if you give it time.

As an experiment, I tried to convince myself to choose the stock market so I could get myself out of debt, but no luck. I'm stuck on physics/metaphysics and reading the literature on autism, neither of which are at all useful for earning a living. If only making money in real life were as easy as making gold off of the World of Warcraft auction house, then I'd be rich...

When I felt my Hellsing/Trinity Blood obsession beginning to fade, I spent months trying to make myself become obsessed with various other anime, to no avail.

Then I tried becoming obsessed with vampire books/movies/TV shows such as Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and various Dracula movies. I even tried out Twilight and Vampire Diaries. It just didn't work out; I felt no real connection or passion for vampires even though that's all I talked about for awhile.

Then I gained my current, actually genuine special interest: Johnny Depp movies. I've tried becoming obsessed with Johnny himself, in order to have a celebrity obsession like so many American NTs. But I realized that I'm much more interested in the lives and personalities of the characters he plays in his movies rather than the actor himself. I've also tried becoming obsessed with single, specific Depp movies rather than just enjoying Depp movies in general, because I thought that having a general interest wasn't "aspie" enough. But that just doesn't work, because I love so many of Depp's characters that it's impossible for me to love one above all the others.

I think I have. My childhood friend got me into Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. I think even the Narnia books. How does he do that?

My mum told me to put more effort into reading my Bible and participating in church, but that doesn't sound like an interest, more assimilation.

My sister once told me to listen to more Australian music. I did and got into Triple J music in 1997 but then got into hard rock (nu metal) from 98-2000.

I have at various times tried to get into what other people had interests in, but it never stuck. I'm so glad since finding out I have AS that I don't need to be ashamed about liking Ben 10, science, history and watching kids shows.

I don't choose IT, IT chooses me. That said, work or society frm time to time make me look into something I would not have thought of, and SOMETIMES it catches, like getting into stylistics from being a language guy in a lit focussed department. But I am not in control, ity happens or not/

Ever since I've been with my boyfriend, I have tried to become interested in the video games he plays... I just can't do it, no matter how hard I try.

Friends have gotten me interested in certain things -- TV shows, books, and video games -- but by now, I have discovered exactly the genres I like. So, before I try it, I'll ask, "What's it about?" or "What kind of ______ is it?" and then I can predetermine my interest. I have tried shows and movies and games that went against my style, and even though it was experimental & due to excessive pressure (I thought maybe this would be an exception), the attempts were always failures. Lots of people try to get me into things I am certain I wouldn't like, based on the style/genre.

I've tried chick flicks and I've tried reality TV, but absolutely no show or movie is ever an exception! "C'mon this will be different," or "I looove this movie, I know you will, too!" Same goes for games. "We play this game all the time at my house, you have to like it!" Ugh.

Basically, I have found out that I can get into new things if they fall in my genres of interest -- bottom line.

Oh, oh: One exception is music. My #1 rule for music is listen to everything. Of course I will develop favorites and I may even get sick of some songs, but I do develop new music tastes simply from people's suggestions. But this is just my quirk. :D

I'm into fashion but I can't get into those types of magazines at all. There's too many ads and I can't fit into anything anyway. I prefer catalogs and SKUs sooooo much more
