This is apparently one of my most noticeable quirks, and it just doesn't seem strange at all to me. From when I was a kid, all the way to today, I've always eaten one thing at a time. I can't really explain why this makes more sense to me than jumping around from item to item like normal people do. It's just a natural part of how I eat, and there's no particular "reason" for it. Usually, there is some string of logic to the order... for example, I like green beans hot or cold, so I'll usually eat them last, giving priority to foods that I'd rather eat while they're still warm. When eating steak fries, I'll usually eat them after the main course, but when eating scrawny fast food fries, I'll usually eat them first because they're thin and likely to get cold.

As far as I understand it, people jump from food to food because they like the mixing of the flavors. If something is prepared with multiple components and presented as a single dish, I have no problem with eating it as a one thing, but if it's presented as two separate foods, I eat them sequentially. Cooking is an art form, I do believe that, and the mixing of flavors can result in some amazing things... but in my eyes, if it's not prepared that way, it's a separate food, each to be eaten in turn. I agree that there are some foods that "go together," but that may be simply because I'm used to seeing them served together.

People act so surprised when they see how I eat. I just don't see how they change gears from "I want to eat chicken" to "I want to eat mashed potatoes" from second to second. To me, it's more like, that chicken deserves its own time to be enjoyed. For as wildly different as people can be, it amazes me that this manner of eating is so standard. Apparently this is just so bizarre that it's not shrugged off as "different," it's something that must be commented on and puzzled over.

I do this too! Is it an Asperger's thing? I prefer to eat individual parts of the meal seperately if I can. Usually from my least favourite thing to my most favourite.

I don't have to do it to the extent that I won't be able to eat a mixed meal like stir fry, though. Luckily.

I usually eat one thing first before starting on the other, but I do make exceptions every now and then. Usually, I work up from least tastiest to the most tastiest.

Of course. I must always finish the sides, salad, rice, macaroni, potatoes, whatever it may be, before I start on the main dish. I don't get seconds until I finish what on my plate first. It's funny, how my parents watch me eat like I'm weird.

Lmao, I can't remember the number of times my mum told me off as a child for for sequential eating (or, as she put it, 'playing with your food' - never understood that) :)

I also do that, as well.

I eat one thing at a time unless it seems like the foods go well together. For example, bread and soup.

I mix food and drink, not very flattering and expected of me taking my otherwise good manners into account.

I eat all my food together, but I used to get told off for examining every mouthful before I ate it, as if I was expecting something to be wrong with the food.

Yeah... not only like eating separate parts of meals, but I've always ate around the marshmallows in my lucky charms so I could eat them all at once at the end. It's not just because I like the marshmallows better... I just feel I need to do it.

I believe the only funny thing with food I do is with peanut butter. I eat the peanut butter on one side of the jar.

I also eat least favourite to most favourite. I didn't realise this wasn't the way everyone ate. I suppose I've never noticed how other people eat, but I never would have thought that it was weird to eat one thing at a time. :?

I eat one thing at a time too and then move onto the next. The reason why people jump all over is because they want to have everything on their plate so they enjoy it and they won't fill up on one food. So that way when they get full, they had eaten everything on the plate even though there is still food left.

I have a specific order in which I have my meal. Some foods are weighed out on an electronic scale to make sure I eat the exact quantity I want. There's usually just one thing on my plate at any particular time, and I don't put anything else on my plate before I'm finished with whatever is there first. Also, I smell everything before putting it in my mouth.

I always eat from least to most favourite too and have a habit of taking food apart if it's possible, though I never thought this was weird either.

Yup, I've always done this too. It's not of major importance (I switch around sometimes) but usually I do go from least favourite to favourite or work around what works best warm.

For example, if I get chicken with potatoes and vegetables, I eat the potatoes first, then vegetables, then chicken. If I get pizza and fries, I eat the fries first because cold fries suck, but I can live with a slightly cooler pizza.
