Reading about misdiagnoses, etc., what do you think you/your parents/whoever was in control should have asked the diagnostic psychologists/psychiatrists to make sure they were capable of making a diagnosis before letting them talk to you?

Since it isn't an exact science it can be hard to determine who is really good. But - I would say perhaps at least getting referrals from other parents, schools, and pediatricians or neurologists. Of course if they do that than they will have to reveal some personal information and people might not want to do that because others might question. Asking for credentials in advance - where did they go to school. And to do their own research about so they are informed and can ask the doctor questions. I guess the bottom line is to not just accept that because someone is an "expert" what they say is correct and to use your instincts too. I saw this one doctor who was supposed to be an "expert" on OCD and he was extremely condescending and not helpful - because he was an "expert" I guess so no one should question him :) .

And to not take the therapists word over their kids! That is a major trust issue no-no.

But if none of that's possible, how do you figure it out from the psychiatrist himself?

Okay, that's one thing. :)
