Are you self diagnosed? I officialy have a Nonverberal Learning Dissibility, ADHD and Depression. However from what I ave learned about Aspergers and what I know about myself. The peaces seem to fit. I'm not shy about talking to people about what I deal with. When asked I tell them my Diagnoses NLD, ADD and depresion. Since I fell that it is likely that I have Aspergers I also tell them that I may very well have Aspergers.

I have only been diagnosed with dyspraxia (because I suspected it) and there have been suspicions of unknown disorder during my life (dyspraxia - ADHD - a strange kind of mental retardation with no real delay but still something unusual - social phobia - we don't know what it is but she's weird disorder - dyslexia - ADD) but never been suspected of having a form of Autism, actually no name had been given (only the characteristics, except for dyslexia when I was 18).

I can relate to Aspies but will not claim that I have Asperger, I am mostly here to find differences and similarities (and also because it is rare to find such a great community), talk to people and learn more about mental/psychologic/neurologic disorders.

Therefore, I am not self-diagnosed, I just "suspect" something close to autism, especially when I see my brother and my father who also have autistic characteristics (but less than I do and no other disorder), I may be right but I may be wrong.

From what I've read, many aspies were misdiagnosed with ADHD / NLD or had both NLD/Asperger or ADHD/Asperger, many of the characteristics are similar. Once you have been diagnosed with one or two disorders, it is even harder to know whether you should have another diagnosis or not since the Asperger characteristics could be caused byt the overlapping disorders (or the other disorders could be a misdiagnosis).

I was self-diagnosed for 7 or so years, just got officially diagnosed about 1-2 months ago.

Semi-self diagnosed, my therapist for three years came out of the blue and said he suspects it now even though in the past I would bring it up every once in a while and he would say no...

The guy that can diagnose me won't do it.

I've had a few people say I can't have it, and a few people say I do have it.... I rely on people's opinions a lot personally, but here's a list:

People that think I can't have it:
My psychiatrist
A past therapist
A couple of Nurses

People that think I have it:
My current therapist
A former AS coworker
A lady that works with AS people professionally

I'm not really self-diagnosed, but I did suspect for a long time that I might be on the spectrum. I first read Donna William's autobiography as a teenager and lots of it just clicked with me. I didn't talk about my suspicions until last year with my psychologist, who, after listening about my experiences, views me as being on the spectrum. My psychiatrist, however, is not interested in diagnosing me as being on the spectrum so diagnostically, I'm still in this strange "do I actually have it or not?" zone.

Self diagnosed, confirmed by clinical opinion after a few months (that's how long it took to get in for the appointments). Documented the experience in my blog.

Diagnosed. When my son was diagnosed both doctors (we got a second opinion) said that I have it too. One doctor said that we were almost "textbook" examples of AS.

Not diagnosed, but bordering on self-diagnosis because I identify with Asperger's to an enormous degree - if I am aspie, it explains huge swathes of my life...

I have never been self diagnosed. In fact I didn't even know I had it until I was diagnosed and I didn't even know what it was then. I'm not a textbook case.

Nope.
In fact I've never even heard of Asperger's Syndrome before until I was taken to get diagnosed by a professional.

Yes, but that's more than likely about to change.

Self-assessed. I let the professionals have their exclusive grip on the word "diagnosis".

Sounds good to me.

I made an attempt to get "officially" diagnosed, but it ended up being too much of a hassle, so I gave up. Whatever...it's good enough for me, even if not for anyone else.
