Do you avoid events which attract people who do not like you

Do you mean academics in your own field who also have Asperger's syndrome? Or do you mean academics who study Asperger's syndrome?

(I should have though Cork, Ireland was safe - there can't be many aspie academics there).

Yes, it is quite uncomfortable to be around people that dislike you at events or functions.
