physical therapy for AS?
are there any physical therapies for AS that anyone can reccomend?? one reads often of stuff for kids- dolphin this, horse that, etc- anything work for adults??
before i knew i had AS, i did some chi gong, which was AMAZING; i was more relaxed and more energetic. other martial arts just made me super violent and a.d.d-ish.
i also recently read that swings/hammocks are good, and from one i used to use, i was aware of a definate notable improvement.
im approaching the 'i'll try anything' stage...
Yes, there are many to deal with sensory problems in autism. Whether you are aware of it or not, sensory problems may be having a great effect on your emotional well-being. Autistic people are often overly sensitive to sensory input such as sound, light, touch and taste. Squeezing (tight hugging), particularly of joints, helps many people to recover or to prevent sensory overload. My neighbour and one of my colleagues does this for me sometimes, but we haven't got the technique quite right yet. You can also squeeze yourself -- there are some exercises with your arms that you can do, e.g. like push-ups against a wall.
Many of us also find weighted blankets helpful. (I really love my weighted blanket -- I even take it to work and lie beneath it when I take a short break.)
ADHD is very common in autistic people too (I think it's 6 in every 7), and regular intense exercise helps a lot to make you feel happier and to concentrate better. If I don't have the time and inclination to go out for exercise, I will just jump up and down on the spot for a while a few times per day; otherwise I go dancing between 9 and 10 in the evening.
