I wonder why people find it scary. It's not much of a habit for me but I do enjoy getting in small dark places. There's this one place downstairs that's nice. It's filled with stuff so I'd have to take it out if I want to be comfortable in it. The trunk of my mom's car is nice too. It's warm and has a glow in the dark pull thing in case you get stuck in there that I like. I like hiding in those kinds of places during a game of hide and go seek and everyone else was amazed I could fit in them.

Perhaps they find the idea that someone would actually like being isolated from the others scary.

i cant remember i did that actually. I did like to build tents underneath the bed and such ...

I actually like turning off the lights at this point in my life. I often take a dark shower for example. I love the lack of visual input, how my eyes adjust to the dark and the soothing sound of the running water :)

I only did this with boxes and my closet, not the cupboard.

On the contrary, I was actually quite claustrophobic.

I've been tempted to try this but I am rather clumsy and I will surely slip and fall and/or knock everything off the shelves.

At my dads house there was a wooded coffee table that we had and I would always go up under it.

My parents' bed had a headboard that you could kind of sit up in, I'd crawl under their bed and under the headboard part and stay there for hours. I also really liked to sit in the dark behind the living room curtains, right where a furnace vent was.

I don't think this is an autism trait at all personally, almost everyone as kids crawled into places they weren't meant to be, sure the motives were different between NTs and Auties (possibly) but the fact remains a lot of kids, autistic or not, did this.

I've always felt more comfortable hiding in the closet or under the bed or being tucked into a corner as tightly as I could. I also love the dark. I'm one of those people who have trouble sleeping if it isn't pitch black.

That sounds pretty good actually. I want to try it someday. As soon as I work up the guts to turn the lights off at night.

Yes but only to teach my dog to play hide and seek with me.
My mum actually did hide in closets a lot.

I have done that too. It is cool having a shower in the dark.

So it may not be a trait of autism. Just things children do. I am going through lots of childhood memories at the moment and wondering if that was because of AS. I think I would like to crawl into a cupboard these days actually. If I had to live with people I think I would do it a lot.

I'm don't agree that such behaviours as described in this thread are definitely nothing to do with AS.

There are many behaviours which appear common to both NT children and AS children. But the crucial difference is often in the frequency, duration and degree of compulsion to behave this way. Stimming is a good example.

For instance there is a distinct difference between:

1. a curious giggling child climbing into a tight dark space for a game of hide and seek or even for five minutes to play on their owm.

2. a child who is alone and whovery regularly climbs into pitch black wardrobes or into cupboards, not in a mood of 'play', nor sulking, and who will stay there sometimes for hours, quite content.
