I personally did not go to the library when I was young unless forced by my parents, nor was I diagnosed with aspergers at an early age. I loved to play with lego's and lincoln log's. I also had a big collection of rocks, and hot wheels. I never went as far as finding out what kinds of rocks they were, just ones that I found cool looking/shiny/odd I would pick up and keep or sometimes I would pick up ordinary ones just because I kicked or threw it for awhile and it would be sentimental. Point is, what does it mean when your interests are not scholastic but visual in nature, does this mean a different form of autism? and if so what kind? HFA? Why is there no distinction? Does there need to be?

I like to stack things, organize things, look at things and their lines/curves, but for the most part my "wordy" interests I'll call are mostly through the internet and do not lend themselves to any books though I do occasionally as an adult seek out books to read up on.

Does the visual and or auditory mind lend itself to different interests?
Does the number and or written mind lend itself to different interests?

In childhood how is this divide seen?

A lot of questions in there...oO take a bite out of one or all.

I was hyperlexic and obsessed with reading. I don't think anyone could have kept me from libraries once I knew what they were.

Edit to add: I don't know if different kinds of thought lend themselves to different interests. I am a visual thinker and love reading.

No but I stayed inside from recess as often as I was allowed. The library was only a place you went once a week.

I don't think there is a distinction. I didn't have subject interests either. I just liked objects.

That was right next to speech and language classes. It was my place of de-stimulation and I recall just wanting to be there all day long. I did not read much was obsesso with Carl Sagon at the time.

I did enjoy the library, it smelled interesting and I did have some books I enjoyed like the hobbit, goosebumps, most books I read on the kid award books..forgot what it's called. They had nice computers in the library, nicest in the whole school (Gateways which at the time were very good) and there was story corner where there was steps down and the librarian or your teacher would read a book to the class.

The public library which I also went to was much less interesting, didn't smell as good, had a lot of people in it, the computers were full and old. I found it difficult to navigate through the aisles as it was so big compared to the school library.

No, because we were only allowed into the libary once a week to pick out a book and if we didn't bring it back the next week we had to write a hundred sentences to help us remember. The libarian was the epitome of the word "b***h".

ya it was the same for us though sometimes we would have book projects and go twice a week. My parents would bring me to the public library though also, so could have been another place for aspies to go to the library.

I liked recess from what I can remember, I liked playing on the jungle gym and getting away from the teachers who were seen as enemies at a young age.

I was diagnosed autistic at a young age. My parents took me to the library at least twice a week.

I think my father probably would be considered Asperger's if he were alive today.

I loved the library and reading books, although now I primarily rely on ebooks.

OK, when I was younger, I think I was a bit starved. I found, and got some books, in a department store, of all places. But I DID have a collection of maybe 40 books that went even to science. ALSO, I got access to encyclopedias, etc... Later I went to a lot of book stores. They were my FAVORITE stores in malls. Then, I know around age 10 or so, I started frequenting libraries. Just my luck, you reminded me that I got a new library card last week and MEANT to get it activated today. 8-(

I ALSO played with lincoln logs, erector sets, and fischertecnik, prior to maybe 10yo.

And I used to organize things a LOT! I labeled my books with their location, in fact.

I wish I were as great with books as I was when I was younger. I actually got rid of a LOT of books, because I moved, but I estimate I have about 1200 books left. They cover spoken languages, computer languages, operating systems for computers, anatomy, chemistry, math, electronics, some applications, mythology, internet, cultures, jobs, certification, mechanics, and finance. I DO have a box full of some about theology also.

Anyway, if I knew all that stuff by heart, WOW! Just the SPOKEN languages, for example, include Chinese, Danish, English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Russian, Spanish. Computer languages include Assembly, Basic, C, C++, Forth, Java, Korn, Lisp, Pascal, Perl, PHP, Tcl/TK, Visual Basic, Visual C++, etc... Well, you get the idea. i only have a few fiction books. I believe that is fire starter and some mythology books, as well as theological, if you count those.

BTW If I get lost in a story, it is almost like watching a movie. I could certainly understand the origins and base idea behind "Die unendliche geschichte", aka "the never eending story". Basically, it is a story about a guy that loses himself in a story, and becomes part of it. The TWIST is that the story itself mentions him and his actions. In the movie, at least, when he fulfills the story, it becomes part of his real world.

I spent a lot of time in the library in primary school, back then I used to read often. In high school I still used to hang-out in the library but it was less about the books then. I guess it felt like a sanctuary. I still socialized (albeit with few friends) but it was usually in or near the library.

I love reading and libraries, but I didn't go to the library much when I was in elementary school. With the public library, I could only go if one of my parents took me. And I had to just find some books and go; there usually wasn't time to sit around and read. I couldn't go to the school library very often, either. Students weren't allowed to come in during lunch or recess, so I could only be there for the 30 minutes a week my class visited.

Only if I had school work to complete or if I had to return a book (Like whenever I had to).

Library was away downtown - no branch libraries in those days. Tons of books at home, from 5th grade on library became more important as I became more mobile. By 11 grade public library AND the university library - father professor gave me access - and home collection. After 12th lots of bookstore time.

I loved going to the local public library and checking out stacks of books. I checked out a little figurine once but I ended up accidentally dropping it and chipping it :(
I was devastated!
Those kinds of things always seemed to happen to me.
I still liked checking out books at the library, though, even after that fateful event occurred.

Yeah when I had no friends. It was a safe house from tourment.
