I have only ever had two jobs but i am desperate for a job to either be more my own boss or have a better routine.....
Being a natural driver ive considered the following........

Driving instructor(good pay)
Postman
Supermarket Lorry driving(i always wanted to drive big vehicles)

These are jobs that are not in the "frontline" of the public witch i am sick and tired of. The overwhelming and most negative aspect is the fact is of making the first move, phone calls, application forms, interviews, training.......Talk about mission imposible!! !! !

You could try courier work. With your local knowledge, companies like Business Post or ANC could probably use someone like you. The hours tend to be long but you do spend your day alone apart from doing deliveries.

The super market lorry drivers are well paid and the jobs are quite easy. Thats why the drivers stay with them for a long time and there are few vacancies. Other LGV driving jobs tend to be less well paid and more frustrating. Tachographs have taken a lot of the fun out of lorry driving.

How about driving a bus?

Ok. I read your post again. Maybe buses aren't your thing.

Beware of those adverts for driving instructors. Some of the claims about large incomes are exagerated.

Yep buses are out of the question(i would love to drive one though). The trouble with anything though is the pay during training.

Long haul OTR drivers are in high demand in the 'States.

Long hual is all very well but here in the UK there are a lot of lorries that run purely for the big supermarkets witch is where a routine can come into it plus near me is a big somerfields depot, i know the local stores/roads and have actually worked for the firm before.

Hi. I would be surprised if any supermarket directly employed a new LGV driver. They all want experienced drivers.

Working as a courier might be a good idea, although it might be a stressful one. You'll basically receive orders, and drive like a manic from one place to another delivering packages

Unfortunately most jobs will require an application form and an interview of sorts. I hate those aspects of looking for a job as well, but it's a hurdle we all have to face :?

You could try applying at Fed Ex or UPS or any package delivery service. You may have to start with sorting parcels, but could move up from there. Also try taxi cabs. You'd only have to put up with one person, but you could ignore him/her, only for directions, etc.

Hi Alex,

I am a Postman - not one who delivers, but I do night sorting in preparation for next day delivery. Royal Mail have a good inclusive policy. Recently another Aspie joined our mailcentre and our managers got leaflets about AS to distribute so that NT's could better understand their new colleague. He and I get on fine. I have been doing it for over 2 years now and the routine is great.

I have also done a lot of driving work, mostly courier work through agencies. I found a lot of it quite stressful with sometimes impossible workloads that had me racing about all over the place!! That did not suit me. One driving job I really enjoyed was as a courier for a large Hospital. I had to deliver and collect mail, drugs, samples etc. to and from smaller cottage hospitals and health centres. I worked to a set timetable for when I had to be at each location - it was the same every day. The routine was great.

I think the thing for me which is important is the routine and predictability of a job, which takes away the stress.

I hope this helps.

Lorry driving is quite well-paid, as there is a shortage of people with a HGV licence. But there is little opportunity to progress within the business. You'll spend a lot of time working on your own, but some contact with colleagues is required, and it may well involve working overnight.
