With some news articles calling Asperger's with "geek syndrome" I got to wondering how many people on WP really fit society's image of a geek. You can of course have social difficulty without being interested in geeky things at all, or you can be mega-social and also have a room full of Star Trek toys. So I wanted to see how much of a connection there is, at least here on WP.

I do consider myself to be pretty geeky, and I don't think it's an insult. I play fighting games competitively and have been to several major tournaments throughout the U.S. I have a rock collection and I love science and math (currently majoring in economics however). I am not a computer genius but I know more about them then most people my age and have moderate programming abilities in C++ and Python. I have a huge amount of video games and video game systems (Xbox360, Wii, PS2, GC, N64, SNES, NES, GBC, GBA, DS), I play video games an average of 4-5 hours a day. I love geeky humor like Monty Python and Penny Arcade. I also love intellectual debates (maybe a little too much, most people don't seem to like thinking...) and make pretty good grades. The Matrix is my favorite movie, I've seen it 11 times.

However, I'm not interested at all in Star Trek, Star Wars, and anime. I just never got into those things.

I would definately be considered a geek.
I play video games and strategy board games.
I work at a comic shop and have a gigatnic comic collection. It is probably the only place that I come off as somewhat socially normal because of my knowledge of comics and the history of the DC Universe.

I don't know anything about comics either, but I know people that do. You should've seen the looks I got when I mentioned that I thought Deadpool was supposed to be a parody of Spider-Man

It's weird because I don't think I act particularly geeky. I have a number of geeky interests, but I mostly keep them hidden from other people. But people still somehow see me as a geek, probably because of my lack of socialising, adeptness at math, glasses, non-fancy clothing and peculiar sense of humour. I don't go around quoting Star Trek to anyone though.

I suppose you could say I am in someways, I consider being a geek to have numerous advantages, but one thing I can't stand about it is the geek chic trend that some cool people are doing right now. They try to act like the stereotypical geek but it just comes off as forced and annoying and don't even get me started with those thick rim glasses with no lenses!

I like sci-fi. I play video games. I enjoy learning and make good grades. I know quite a bit about modern computer hardware.

Yeah, I think I fit the geek stereotype.

Yes:

I love science fiction
I play video games 85% of the day
I have no real-life friends of the opposite sex

No:

I don't wear glasses
I don't have braces (I used to, though)
I don't like Star Trek

I really like sci-fi especially Star Trek, and I play through tons of video games. But I'm a gangsta looking mofo and quite strong too.

No. I think I come across as more of a punk. I never cared if I got good grades, I needed a tangible reward for a job well done. Not a mark on the paper. I'm only concered with grades becuase I have spefic goals and want to be a vet. I don't particualr enjoy fiction and I HATE Star Treck. The only anime I ever liked was Sonic X. I don't like video games that involve someone else's storyline. I only enjoy games like Zoo Tycoon and Sims in "sandbox" mode. I got into Sonic via the cartoons in case your wondering.

I guess you could say that I am. Anime has been pretty much a lifelong obsession for me. I'm really good with computers, even to the point of fixing things that the repair guy couldn't. I tried to teach myself HTML once, and I am trying to learn 3D modeling. My hygiene isn't the best, I (am supposed to) wear glasses, I don't care about fashion very much, and I have no friends in real life.

Yeah I know exactly what you're talking about. It goes into the whole "hipster" trend.

I guess so. I wear glasses, watch sci-fi and British comedy incessantly, have a job the requires proficiency in more than one programming language, and have a little bit of a crush on Stephen Hawking.

Wait, British comedy is geeky? I never knew that.

I have watched loads, including:

Monty Python's Flying Circus
The Goodies
Open All Hours
Please Sir
Yes, Minister
Brittas Empire
Little Britain
A little bit of Fry and Laurie
That Mitchell and Webb Look
The Catherine Tate Show
We Are Klang
The Vicar of Dibley
Father Ted
Absolutely Fabulous

I could go on.

Let's see.

In my room I have 2001: A Space Odyssey on Beta video. Next to that is a rare 11 inch figure of Dr. McCoy from Star Trek, then my Stargate action figures and a 13inch remote control Dalek. Below that is my Doctor Who shelf. Beside that my 5.5 inch telescope.

Nope, not seeing any indication of being a stereotypical geek.

Hold on, have to check my program guide...

2:30PM: Stargate SG1 season 10
3:30PM: Stargate SGU season 1
4:30PM: Stargate SG1 season 9
5:30PM Doctor Who season 12
6:00PM: Doctor Who season 12
6:30PM Star Trek: The Next Generation season 3

Wait til you see what I have lined up for Saturday night.

The only comics I collect are Star Wars.

Got a bit of a thing for air force aircraft too.

I used to watch anime over 10 years ago. Have no idea what they've got out now.

OK, so, slightly geeky. One thing I don't have in common with geeks is I don't go to comic cons our share my geekiness with other people. Well, there's one friend who is giving me her Star Trek Next Gen figures, still in the box.
