Decorating your happy place
I stick funny posters, newspaper cuttings, photos, my own home-made posters, random printed out things, world maps, periodic tables, London Underground maps, medication box inserts (the ones that tell you the information about them), chemical structures and even USB cables on my walls.
This is to ensure that my walls are almost completely covered with things. I cannot stand bare walls.
When I move out of supported housing I am putting light blue wallpaper up in my new house (I'm going to move in with a friend) and drawing all over it.

I am a partially verbal classic autistic. I am a pharmacology student with full time support.
My room is decorated with some plant photos in simple black frames, semi-old Mac computers (2003–2004), myriad pillows, a well-stocked and alphabetised bookshelf, and general neatness.
As for the 'ambiance' of my room/happy place, the lightbulb must be incandescent, or I get irritated. I do not like to open the windows as they change the temperature and smell too much. My room currently smells like books and my desk, which is made of a nice hardwood. If I need to make myself warm, I will don a blanket. If I need to cool down, I will turn on the fan, or the air conditioner to exactly 21 degrees celsius. But I never open the windows. I have to cover up the lights on my modem and alarm clock before I sleep. My room must be cleaned every morning, or the external disorder leaks into my head throughout the day.
As much as the above isn't decoration, it's just as important to me.
My room's an interesting case. Against the back wall, I have a futon, not one of those American folding couch futons, but the real thing, which looks more like a thick sleeping bag on the floor. In the middle is a zataku (a Japanese sitting table with cushions) In the left back corner is a dresser, in the right back corner is a desk. Against the left wall is a couch, and against the front wall is a square table with a model of Hogwarts castle that I built out of foam-core and paper mache. There are Japanese posters/news paper clippings all over the wall.
My bedroom is decorated in live music photographs that I took myself (A2 size), music posters, set lists, and there's a whole section dedicated to my science fiction collection especially Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate and a massive Doctor Who book shelf.
Basically all my interests surround me.

My room is very neat, organised and colour-coordinated. Everything's in its proper place, and my wardrobe items are arranged by category. It's important to me that my living space is clean and orderly, and that the decor and furniture blend well.
The other main feature of my bedroom's style is that the colour scheme is red, white and brown - red being my favourite colour. Aside from this, there is very little about my bedroom that marks it out as a very personal space. I have no posters or photographs dotted around the place, for example, though there are a few empty photo frames that are only there for decoration!
I am not very particular about where items are located, but I do prefer my room to be as clean and empty as possible. Only recently I tossed out a lot of furniture, including my bed (I sleep on the floor now). I just felt it was in the way.
I have no posters or photographs or other things on the walls. It's all white and clean. There are white blinds on the windows.
The biggest items is a couch I am not very happy with. But I do get visitors on rare occasions and apparently it is rude to make them sit on the floor. So I tolerate the couch.
If I could, I would get furniture that can be folded into the walls so the rest is completely open and empty.

My room is very small, but packed with stuff. I redecorated the room a few years ago, back then my color-scheme was black, red and white. But over the years my room have become more and more filled with color. For me, my room means safety. Others usually think that it's too crowded, messy, unorganized or even too dark. Since I can't relax in rooms with too much light my room I only have one lamp and no lightly colored furniture. My most precious items are my bookshelf that's almost too overcrowded with books too stand on its own.
