My boyfriend with Asperger's is about to start college next month and the school is making him take a test in basic algebra so he can enter a college algebra class. Well, he has a difficult time with elementary algebra and even bigger trouble at concentrating. Because he has no utter interest in algebra he doesn't have the proper focus to study for the test. He is completely confused, and he is worried and beginning to panic, believing he won't be able to pass the college algebra class. I've offered him my support and I've comforted him, but is there any way he can get focused? He doesn't know what to do. I've told him to talk to the advisor over his major about classes and see if there is a highschool level math class that he can take before going into a college level math class. He hasn't been to school for 5 years and he seems to have forgotten most of what he learned in highschool. Are there any tips that I could give him on concentrating better?

this exact thing happened to me. I told my college counselor what was going on, they contacted the math department who told me if I wanted to take a pre-algebra class they'd let me do that. I still had to take the test, which was awful. But I knew there was a pathway, and I wasn't stuck anymore. So it took a bit longer to get through college, but I didn't care. Once I took that pre-algebra class I was way less nervous and later I was able to make an A in algebra. Hope this helps.

If he doesn't pass the test what they will do is have him take an uncredited math class with his other courses. Just by passing this class he will be able to take the required math he needs to graduate. But this will not prevent him from attending college. Check with the school to confirm this. But this is how it was in three colleges I attended. (I have several degrees)

Try some supplements?

When I need to focus I just pop a pill but it being a controlled drug and all it's not easy to get unless you have a prescription - and that's the only way you should get it!

Anyway, when I don't medicate and need to focus I just take Omega 3 fish oil.

He could also do practice tests. Maybe there can be a reward at the end. 'Do this and you get a special treat.' Something like that.

There's actually some supplements called nootropics that do trigger areas of the brain to help you concentrate but you have to buy them online.

Thanks everyone for replying. It's a little difficult for him to get adjusted to this, but I let him know about some of the things you said. I do hope to hear more tips for others, too. Thanks.
