In general, 0.6 percent of children are diagnosed with autism,

Where I am that number is closer to 2% (1 in 50). 8O Anyway, a thought on why children born prematurely may be autistic more often is that one of the causes of premature birth can be the result of the mother having an unusually small or malformed uterus so even if the mother doesn't present as autistic herself she still may have a genetic mutation that can be passed on and may manifest as autism (this is why my son was premature), another reason could be that the mother is suffering from some sort of illness or infection that leads to a premature birth and those things can also affect development.
Edit: Just read an article stating that an autism research team found a 3% autism rate when they screened 1,000 kids from underserved/rural towns in my state, so 2% may still be an understatement. :?
Another edit: I'm a little disturbed now, when my son was diagnosed a little over two years ago I remember looking up the rate for my state and it was 1 in 50 boys and I've just read an article siting that it's now 1 in 29 boys (1 in 50 overall), I really really hope that just means they're just acknowledging subtle manifestations of Asperger's/HFA more and that these aren't all kids with more profound problems. :|

I am a female. I was born just 5 days after my due date (not every baby is born on their exact due date so that doesn't mean anything, especially if it's a bit later). There was no birth complications. My mum didn't smoke or drink whilst pregnant (she didn't smoke or drink anyway). I came out of the ''correct place''. I was a perfectly normal, healthy baby.

And yet I was STILL cursed with this f*****g Aspergers s**t.

I was born at 3lbs 1 oz and dropped to 2 lbs 14oz after. Main thing was not prematurity it was my deceased twin and the fact that I was dying and vigorously removed from my mom with forceps. I had an apgar score of 1. Not a good start. But I here. I have diagnosed with Aspergers, NLD and ADD. and I am AWESOME! :)

Yes there is scientific info showing link between birth issues and autism spectrum.

DS was born at 36 weeks (term is considered from 37) but he was really small - 2 kgs (about 4lb 09). I had gestational diabetes and was put on a restricted diet which I can't help but wonder if it may have had something to do with his drop in weight. There are 'trace elements' of aspergers arounds us so it's not hugely surprisingly that he has it but I am sure his low weight is a contributing factor

Quite the opposite - I was more than two weeks late, induced, 48 hours of labor and pulled out with forceps in the end. I weighed almost 9 pounds. I didn't want to leave, I was comfortable where I was.

I'm not sure if there's any connection but I'd like to research if there is at least some correlation between the two. My twin sister (who also has AS) and me were born 3 months early and weighed 3 lbs 2 oz and 1 lb 12 oz, respectively. Has anyone seen any research on premature twins or just twins who are on the spectrum? That'd be interesting, too.

Two weeks late. Very, very overweight as a baby. Somehow, I turned slim as hell eventually.
